Language
 Pillar Description: Language is made up of socially shared rules
and gestures.
 Characteristics of Language: Combinable, Reflexive,
Interchangeable
 Importance: Comprehension of our human experiences, through
reflection of our own personal connections. In order, to let others
know how we feel, what we need, and to ask questions.
 Role in the 21st Century Classroom: The role of language in the
classroom is to develop communication competency. This would
allow students to effectively communicate and more accepting of
other studies and cultures. This teaching would dramatically break
barriers of language, showing that you have an invested interest in
the other person.
5 Tech Tools to Enhance
Language Understanding
 Voki: You are able to change the speech of the avatar, in order to let students
‘hear’ the language; Voki can be used daily if necessary.
 Podcast: Students are able to find podcasts about communities they know
and different cultures they wish to know more about. As a teacher you can
make your own podcast by recording your lectures for your students.
 Twitter: Students can follow people from other countries and ethic
backgrounds. Twitter can also be a type of written communication/symbolism
that could help familiarize students with the language.
 WebQuest: Allows students to learn about language from in a more modern
and interactive way for the digital learners of today.
 YouTube: Students and teachers can get accessible videos (from phones,
tablet, or computer) that are relevant to different languages and cultures,
which is effective for small and large classrooms.
WebQuest
 This Sign Language WebQuest helps motivate students to
learn a universal language, in order to benefit society.
 Main purpose is to help students associate normal everyday
objects with the appropriate sign. This helps students
understand the point of view of peers with disabilities, and
be able to communicate effectively.
 Sign Language is also a good tool to implement within your
classroom management.
 Ex. Student would sign for bathroom etc, in order to not disrupt
the classroom environment.
Conclusion
 Language is made up of socially shared rules and
gestures that tend to help our comprehension of human
experiences, through reflection of our own personal
connections. There are many ways to promote
language competency through different technologies as
we have thoroughly explained. Language is not only a
spoken language but it is able to be physical and visual
as well. Communicating effectively helps promote
social enrichment and mental proficiency.
