The Washington County Department of Business Development announced
that Bikle Manufacturing, Inc. has received a Small Business Week Award
through the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Baltimore District office.
“I am very humbled to receive
this award. My late grandfather
built a great company and left a
strong legacy but sadly, a series
of unfortunate events happened
during that season which were
slowly destroying the company.
Pap believed in me and I was
confident I could turn it around,”
said Joanie Cooper-Gerber,
president, Bikle Manufacturing.
“We want to build a base of
government contracting to help federal and state contracting offices fulfill their
Women-Owned Small Business set aside requirements. I want to give back to
the community with manufacturing internships, community support and be a
proud partner in the Smithsburg community. I am grateful for this recognition
that will help us accomplish these goals."
Each year, the President of the United States declares National Small Business
Week to celebrate the contributions of the small business community to the
nation’s economy. The SBA holds the annual awards competition to recognize
outstanding small business owners and their advocates.
District winners were honored at the 32nd Annual Maryland Small Business
Week Awards Luncheon June 15 at Martin’s West in Woodlawn, Md. For
information on the 2016 Maryland Small Business Week Awards Luncheon visit
the event website at www.mdsbwawards.org.
In business since 1971, Bikle Manufacturing specializes in machine tool
rebuilding and retrofitting with computer numerical control precision machining
and fabrication.
Earlier this year, Bikle Manufacturing, Inc. joined the ranks of 31 other
Washington County small businesses certified as woman and minority owned
organizations.

Hagerstown Regional Airport recently received the
Balchen/Post Award and the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security Partnership Award.
During the International Aviation Snow Symposium HGR
was honored with an honorable mention for excellence in
the performance of airport snow and ice control during
winter 2015 - 2016. The honorable mention award for
small commercial airport recognizes HGR’s crew, the
personnel of the airport snow and ice control teams and
those who have throughout the past winter demonstrated
determination for excellence in their efforts to keep the
airport open and safe.
“We’re committed to making a difference and improving
operations for our passengers and staff,” said Phil
Ridenour, director, Hagerstown Regional Airport.
“Whether that’s persevering through record snow fall and
keeping the runway open or partnering to improve our
facilities, we’re focused on delivering a top-notch travel
experience with a small town feel.”
Additionally, HGR was recognized at the annual TSA/BWI
Honorary Award Ceremony. During the ceremony the
U.S. Department of Homeland Security Transportation
Security Administration presented HGR staff with a
Partnership Award.
Criteria for the award includes the use of airport’s
creativity and flexibility in the development of security
screening tools and resources. HGR collaborated with
TSA to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the
security checkpoint despite space constraints. This
included adapting public space within the terminal to
accommodate TSA requirements, ultimately leading to a
better overall customer experience.
“The Transportation Security Administration values the
partnership we have with Hagerstown Regional Airport
and Airport Director Phil Ridenour,” said TSA Federal
Security Director for Maryland Andrea R. Mishoe.
“Mr. Ridenour’s interest and initiative taken in working
together on the checkpoint redesign project with TSA
has helped increase passenger throughput with a focus
on efficiency. The result is a notable improvement of the
security operation that will help ensure that travelers who
depart Hagerstown will arrive at their destinations safely.”

WASHINGTON COUNTY WINE MAKES STRONG SHOWING AT 2016
COMPTROLLER’S CUP
Washington County wines bring home 20 awards
Join the Washington County Office of Agricultural Business Development in celebrating the local, award-winning wines
recognized during the 2016 Maryland Comptroller’s Cup Wine Competition.
“For every three dollars spent in wineries, tourists will add one dollar additional to the local economy, so wine and the
agricultural element is just another piece of our economic development strategy,” said Leslie Hart, Washington County
Department of Business Development, ag business development specialist. “The next time you’re out dining, ask for
Washington County wine and support our amazing vineyards!”

everyone on their successes and we look forward to
continuing to produce great wine in the "Old Line State,"
said Jed Gray, Big Cork Vineyards, general manager.
The Annual Comptroller’s Cup Competition is directed
by Al Spoler, host of WYPR’s Cellar Notes, and brings
together wine makers from across the state for the
opportunity to taste and evaluate each other’s wine. The
competition is blind– judges only know the composition
of the wine, not the label, price, intended market or any
other details. Panels of five judges are given a flight of
wine spanning a single category, and then are asked to
evaluate the wines within the category.

County wines, don’t miss Maryland Wine Week July 18 –

My late grandfather built a great company and left a strong legacy but sadly, a series of unfortunate events happened during that season which were slowly destroying the company. Pap believed in me and I was confident I could turn it around,” said Joanie Cooper-Gerber, president, Bikle Manufacturing. “We want to build a base of government contracting to help federal and state contracting offices fulfill their Women-Owned Small Business set aside requirements. I want to give back to the community with manufacturing internships, community support and be a proud partner in the Smithsburg community. I am grateful for this recognition that will help us accomplish these goals." Each year, the President of the United States declares National Small Business Week to celebrate the contributions of the small business community to the nation’s economy. The SBA holds the annual awards competition to recognize outstanding small business owners and their advocates. District winners were honored at the 32nd Annual Maryland Small Business Week Awards Luncheon June 15 at Martin’s West in Woodlawn, Md. For information on the 2016 Maryland Small Business Week Awards Luncheon visit the event website at www.mdsbwawards.org. In business since 1971, Bikle Manufacturing specializes in machine tool rebuilding and retrofitting with computer numerical control precision machining and fabrication. Earlier this year, Bikle Manufacturing, Inc. joined the ranks of 31 other Washington County small businesses certified as woman and minority owned organizations. • 2. DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT JOURNAL 2 ISSUE #10 | JULY / AUGUST Hagerstown Regional Airport recently received the Balchen/Post Award and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Partnership Award. During the International Aviation Snow Symposium HGR was honored with an honorable mention for excellence in the performance of airport snow and ice control during winter 2015 - 2016. The honorable mention award for small commercial airport recognizes HGR’s crew, the personnel of the airport snow and ice control teams and those who have throughout the past winter demonstrated determination for excellence in their efforts to keep the airport open and safe. “We’re committed to making a difference and improving operations for our passengers and staff,” said Phil Ridenour, director, Hagerstown Regional Airport. “Whether that’s persevering through record snow fall and keeping the runway open or partnering to improve our facilities, we’re focused on delivering a top-notch travel experience with a small town feel.” Additionally, HGR was recognized at the annual TSA/BWI Honorary Award Ceremony. During the ceremony the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Transportation Security Administration presented HGR staff with a Partnership Award. Criteria for the award includes the use of airport’s creativity and flexibility in the development of security screening tools and resources. HGR collaborated with TSA to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the security checkpoint despite space constraints. This included adapting public space within the terminal to accommodate TSA requirements, ultimately leading to a better overall customer experience. “The Transportation Security Administration values the partnership we have with Hagerstown Regional Airport and Airport Director Phil Ridenour,” said TSA Federal Security Director for Maryland Andrea R. Mishoe. “Mr. Ridenour’s interest and initiative taken in working together on the checkpoint redesign project with TSA has helped increase passenger throughput with a focus on efficiency. The result is a notable improvement of the security operation that will help ensure that travelers who depart Hagerstown will arrive at their destinations safely.” To learn more about HGR events, flights and services visit flyhagerstown.com or like HGR on Facebook at Hagerstown Regional Airport. This year Washington County wine swept 20 awards including: Gold Medalists Big Cork Vineyards • Black Cap  Big Cork Vineyards • Cabernet Franc 2014  Big Cork Vineyards • Chardonnay 2015  Big Cork Vineyards • Malbec 2014  Silver Medalists Big Cork Vineyards • Meritage 2014  Big Cork Vineyards • Syrah 2014  Big Cork Vineyards • Syrah Rosé 2015  Big Cork Vineyards • Vidal Ice 2014  Big Cork Vineyards • Vidal Ice 2015 Big Cork Vineyards • Viognier 2015  Knob Hall Winery • Cabernet Franc 2013  Knob Hall Winery • Cuvée Josephine 2013  Knob Hall Winery • Petit Verdot 2013  Knob Hall Winery • Prestige 2013 Bronze Medalists Big Cork Vineyards • Petit Verdot 2014  Big Cork Vineyards • Russian Kiss 2015  Big Cork Vineyards • Sauvignon Blanc 2015  Big Cork Vineyards • Viognier 2014  Knob Hall Winery • Chardonnay Reserve 2014  Knob Hall Winery • Reserve Chambourcin 2013 “Big Cork Vineyards is proud to be part of such an amazing group of wine producers. The Annual Comptroller’s Cup Competition is directed by Al Spoler, host of WYPR’s Cellar Notes, and brings together wine makers from across the state for the opportunity to taste and evaluate each other’s wine. The competition is blind– judges only know the composition of the wine, not the label, price, intended market or any other details. Panels of five judges are given a flight of wine spanning a single category, and then are asked to evaluate the wines within the category. If you’re interested in more information about Washington County wines, don’t miss Maryland Wine Week July 18 – 26, 2016.
