2. GOAL SETTING
WHAT IS A GOAL?
A desired result or end-point.
The end toward which effort is directed
3. GOALS & OBJECTIVES
Think of a goal as the
destination of a trip, and
the objectives are
how you’re going to get
from here to there.
Each objective may
have several action
steps associated with it
as well.
4. If you are planning a vacation,
what steps do you take to
ensure a great trip?
When will you leave?
How ill you get there? What method of
transportation will be used?
Where will you be lodging?
How much money can you spend?
What will you wear?
What will you do when
you get there?
5. Set your Goal & Own It!!
Thegoal and objectives
should be yours.
It’s
alright to accept advice and
suggestions from others, but
you will be more motivated to
do something if it’s something
you really want to do.
Be cautious about defining success in terms of
what your spouse, parent or friend sees as
success for you.
6. Create Your Plan,
Work Your Plan
The greatest enemy of action is
the lack of a plan.
Goals are only wishful
thinking unless ….
you define objectives to
reach the goal!
Objectives
must have specific
measurements and you
must act upon them.
7. Choose Good Objectives to
help you reach your Goal.
Objectives should be:
Inspirational – to keep you motivated
Time bound – to keep you focused
Measurable – clearly define what is expected
Attainable
8. Inspirational
The objectives should
be uplifting and positive.
Have confidence in
yourself.
Picture yourself reaching
your goal.
9. Timebound
Good objectives have target dates
and set time limits with defined
start and stop dates.
Often you will have multiple
action steps for an objective
and each step may have a
target date.
10. Measurable
Measure your
progress by milestones,
percentages and dates.
Lose weight is not specific,
but lose 30 pounds at 1
pound a week can be
measured by simply
stepping on a scale.
11. Timebound AND Measurable
“I want to read 24 books” may be your goal
but it is not a good objective…..
A better statement would be:
“I’ll read 2 books a month for the next year”
This statement is better because it has:
milestones or targets that are
measurable (2 books)
time limits (a month)
and a
target date (for the next year)
12. Make each step ACHEIVABLE
Objectivesshould
challenge you, but they
should not be a fantasy
or daydream.
Make them realistic so
you don’t set yourself
up to fail, but make
them hard enough that
you will have to stretch
a bit.
13. Your Objectives are Important
It helps to write objectives down.
Once written, the objective
becomes a tangible and
concrete commitment.
Written objectives are also a
reminder and a record of
promises you have made to
yourself.
14. Identify Obstacles to Success
What might come up that
would prevent you from
obtaining your objectives?
Plan Ahead! Put
contingency plans into
place and resolve problems
before they occur.
15. Evaluate Your Progress
Review your objectives
periodically to ensure that they
continue to be
realistic, timely, relevant and
achievable.
It’s
okay and sometimes
necessary to make adjustments
Keep your eye on your goal
16. Reward Yourself
Stay Motivated!!
We stay motivated to work toward
our objectives when we know the
rewards.
What will be your reward once
you’ve accomplished your
objective?
Figure out what motivates
you.
