After we gone through this presentation, each one of you will have an better awareness of the value of your personal brand and the impact that social media can make, positively and negatively. And I’ll show you some tools that you can use to monitor, protect and grow your online reputation.
What is a Brand? It’s identifiable, recognisable, valuable and influential.
But it’s more than just a logo, it’s the feeling we have when they see the brand.
Similar to the business brand, a personal brand is valuable and can influence people.
Your personal brand will be the single most important asset you will ever own.
It will take time to build and nurture, but will be very fragile if you abuse it or allow others to degrade it.
Over your lifetime you will build a personal brand, the intrinsic value of that will either open or close doors for you.
I’ll show you why that’s the case and how you can give yourself the best possible brand ‘YOU’.
Who do you know that has a strong and valuable personal brand?
Here’s a few examples:
Hugh Jackman -
Dame Edna Everage -
Bindi Irwin -
Jonathon Thurston -
“People will make up their mind about how they feel about you without even meeting you and you’ll never know what influenced them to make that assumption”
“People will make up their mind about how they feel about you without even meeting you and you’ll never know what influenced them to make that assumption”
You’re going to need to protect and grow your online reputation, as technology changes, your online reputation will be your resume, it’s how people will make their first impressions of you. Let’s go over why you need to manage your online reputation, but first, we need to understand…
What could possibly go wrong?
Let’s look at some seemingly innocent mistakes people made that have affected their future.
Justine Sacco, a PR executive, was fired after sending this racist tweet which blew up whilst she was on her plane to South Africa.
Charlie Sheen was once the highest paid actor on television, however, Sheen’s star power became a little dimmer after he showed the media part of his crazy side.
Reports of alcohol, drug abuse and domestic violence made its way into the media.
After being fired from Two and a Half Men, Sheen went on very public rants about “tiger blood,” and “winning.”
In 2011, Penn State's legendary coach Joe Paterno was fired for neglecting to address child molestation that allegedly took place in his locker room.
It was a huge scandal that affected hundreds of players and family members, and their future.
But Ashton Kutcher apparently didn't realise the gravity of the issue, as he tweeted, 'How do you fire Jo Pa? #insult #noclass as a hawkeye fan I find it in poor taste.'
And sometimes you just make stupid mistakes like dentist Walter Palmer who killed the famous lion called Cecil and then thought it would be a good idea to post images of him bragging about it on social media. Needless to say that his dental career will never be the same.
This Taco Bell employee decided to join in a silly prank by photographing himself looking like he was urinating on an order and posting it to Twitter. He was arrested and potentially charged with a criminal act which had a 20 year prison term. Lucky for him forensics proved it was in fact MountDew softdrink and not the real thing.
A friend of teacher Ashley Payne posted a photo on Facebook of her friend holding a glass of wine and a glass of beer. When the photo was taken she thought her privacy settings were on “high”, but apparently, that wasn’t enough. A nosy parent of the high profile school she taught at found it and showed members of the school board, also noting Payne’s use of “the B word” on her page, ultimately resulting in Payne being forced to resign.
Back in 2008 Corey Delaney advertised his party on MySpace and 500 people turned up with a damage bill of $20,000. He went down in Australian history as that kid that trashed a neighbourhood. In fact, he was so infamous he found it hard to find a job – he even tried to setup an ‘online party planning’ business.
Want more examples, there’s some great video interviews on a SBS show called “The internet ruined my life”
What happens online affects your entire life.
Because the line between personal and professional no longer exists.
No matter how private you think you are online,
Every single thing you do online will be accessible to other people until the end of time.
Posts, shares, likes, comments, reviews, friends, purchases, search history,
So, what’s the solution…
You could disappear from the internet altogether
But that’s probably not an option,
And could actually go against you when people notice that you don’t have a digital footprint
They might think you have something to hide.
For career advancement it is important NOT to be invisible.
This will help you market yourself in your job search
It’s about controlling “first impressions”
Use social media to show your personality not your flaws
“In the not too distant future, your digital footprint will carry far more weight than anything you might include on your resume”
You might be thinking that is doesn’t really matter yet, you can work on your reputation when you’ve finished your degree.
Why should you care now? It’s an “Employer’s Market”
You need to stand out from everyone else
It will influence you finding a job and advancing in a career, getting head-hunted by organisations, growing you contacts and networks, accessing opportunities and even getting loans or grants.
A good reputation is more valuable than money
Your reputation can influence others
We are in the “knowledge” economy – what others can see, not what’s in your head.
Now you’ve got a good understand of what’s at risk, but what can you do about it?
Donald Trump had purchased JebBush.com and redirected it to his own website.
Make sure you own your own online address.
Cost $12 yearly
Even if you don’t use it.
You can install a blog or redirect it to another platform.
