Class Goals

    • Today you will:
        1. Learn why looking for a job online is
           important.
        2. Learn what websites are helpful to
           jobseekers.
        3. Learn what resources are available for
general advice about finding a job.

03/21/13 2
Why look online?
    • Newspaper classifieds do not include anywhere
close to the total number of jobs available.
    • Employers want employees who know how to use
a computer so they are weeding out those who
don’t know how to use a computer by only listing
        online.
    • In a difficult job market, employers may not need
to do anything but list current openings on their
own website to get qualified applicants.

03/21/13 3
The Biggest Sites
You’ll want to familiarize yourself with one
of the big sites and frequent it regularly to
      check for new posts.
    • Careerbuilder.com

    • Monster.com

    • Indeed.com

03/21/13 4
Tips for Using Sites Like
                   Careerbuilders.com
      • If you are visiting a
           website regularly, always
           use the Advanced Search
      • Make sure to limit your
           search under “posted
           within” so you don’t get
           repeats from before .”

      • These sites often have
           items also listed in
           fresnobee.com/jobs

03/21/13 5
Hourly and
                      entry level jobs
                        fresno.craigslist.org
      • Organized like a classified ad
      • If you are only given the option to email that means
you must follow up that way so make sure you have
           an appropriate email address
      • It’s free for an employer to post here so you’ll find
plenty of jobs here that aren’t on the big sites
      • Be careful of scams. Anything that sounds too good
to be true is just that

03/21/13 6
CalJOBS
    • http://www.caljobs.ca.gov (choose
        jobseeker)
    • You have to create an account to even
browse here but it’s free for employers to
post so there’s a lot to find
    • Same content as what you see displayed at
        local career centers

03/21/13 7
LinkedIn
    • Use for professional networking as well as
        job hunting
    • 150 Million Users (2 new users per second)
    • Users can apply to jobs directly

03/21/13 8
Additional Resources to
                   Utilize
    • Library books on everything from resumes, interviews etc.
Explore the College & Career section.
    • Meet one-on-one with FCPL’s Jobs Services Librarian
        (600-6232)
    • Learning Express -- practice tests (civil service, GED,
        etc.), resume tips, computer tutorials
    • Job Now! – resume feedback, career coaching and more.

03/21/13 9
With remaining time
    • Additional Questions?
    • Create an account with any of the sites we

    • Do some practice searches
    • Try Learning Express or Job Now!

  2. List what will be covered
  3. A company can pay extra when listing in the newspaper to be listed in these type of sights so be aware of duplicate postings, particularly on indeed.com since it’s purpose is to pull from other places (expect duplicates).
  4. .
  5. Emphasize scams. Do some demos.
  6. To login and show an account you can use login: sunpatron and pswd 1lovebooks but don’t give this out to patrons. Explain they will have to create an account that include a ssn, leave that up to them but don’t do it on site. Just jump in and show them what they find and let them decide later if they want to create an account. Watch for fakeout sites like caljobs.com
