Secrets of motivational
       speakers
    February 24, 2013

                  Presented by Caroline Thay
Who are your favorite
motivational speakers?
Purpose and outcome

• Identify your purpose for delivering the
speech and desired outcome. What state do
you want to elicit in your audience?
• Who is your audience and what do they
  want?
• Maximum impact when your purpose
  matches what the audience wants.
Preparation before the speech

• Breathing exercises, stretching.
• Mentally go through the presentation and
visualize it unfold the way you want it.
• Mental preparation: get in your “zone”, elicit
the desired state in yourself first (motivation,
  excitement, etc.)
Leverage non-verbal communication

• Why is it important for you to be in the state
you want to elicit in your audience?
 You communicate your state to others
• Your state influences:
 Your breathing speed, depth and rhythm
Leverage non-verbal communication

• It influences:
 Your volume, tone of voice
   Your energy level
   Your movements and gestures
   Your facial expressions
   Your body posture
Before the speech

• Get someone to introduce you.
   Why?
• As you walk in, repeat in your head a
sentence that makes you feel powerful,
  unstoppable.
• Scan your audience so everyone feels
  included.
Tips for building presence on stage
• Check posture, breathing, stance.
If you did a good job at eliciting the state
in you, your body language will reflect
   that state.
• Be open and flexible.
• Connect to your center and experience your
  strength.
   Muscle test demo.
Involve your audience

• Connect with your audience: eye contact,
  divide room into sections.
• Get your audience to agree to what you say.
• Get your audience to participate: finish
  sentences, answer questions…
Use of language for Motivation
• The different levels of language: chunking
  up and down.
 Use the right level of communication for
your intended purpose (covered in details
   in the NLP training)
• Use of nominalizations.
• Speak in terms of possibilities.
Story-telling & metaphors

• Why is it so effective?
• People remember stories more than
  theories.
• Good tool for teaching, to get through
resistance, talks to the unconscious mind.
Demo with someone from the
         audience:
See how changing your state
changes the way you conduct
      a presentation.
Discussion:
How would you use these
