Vision of the team
Once the logistics of the material chain will be
optimised, power plants will be very efficient
and clean, especially when designed to use only
wood as their fuel.
               fuel
It will also be possible to use the existing methods
in harnessing energy-wood plantations that will
thereby become more productive.
                         productive

We believe that these are the key elements to take
bio-energy production to a competitive level for the
first time ever.

28-09-2001/ SMa
Objectives
to conduct high level research on the development of renewable
and clean bio-energy technology

to model, develop and optimise the complete energy chain
from the forest to the consumers

to develop an energy system producing fuel for the power plant at
a competitive price (<8 EURO/Mwh at the plant)

to develop an energy system that is neutral concerning the CO2
emissions and which keeps other emissions on a lower level
than what the regulations require

to develop machinery and equipment to serve these purposes

to conduct tests to demonstrate the applicability in several
European countries
28-09-2001/ SMa
Work division
• The co-ordinator, Timberjack, will develop methods and
machinery for collecting and handling the material.
• UPM-Kymmene as an end-user will test the developed
  technology at their plants.
• Shotton Paper and Caledonian Paper company will use and
modify this technology for the UK plants.
• Research involving methods, economics, logistics and
emissions will be conducted by the partners in Austria, (ARCS),
France, (CEMAGREF and AFOCEL) and Italy (IRL).
• CEMAGREF will contribute to collecting equipment design and
IRL will study the possibilities of adapting this technology to
the Southern European conditions. ARCS will make a “LCA”,
Life cycle assessment on the components of the chain.

    28-09-2001/ SMa
Total Optimization

28-09-2001/ SMa
Milestones and expected results
a new method of collecting the small wood and
  thinning residuals from forestry operations

a new method of collecting the “normal” logging
  residuals left from commercial fellings

fuel price at the power plant < 8 EURO/MWh

neutral CO2 and nutrient balance together with
  minimised combustion emissions

at least one working energy chain realised on the
practical level at full industrial scale

Logging,
1st step of Bundling Technology
• While working, the harvester
accumulates the slash on piles
(faster to feed into bundling
machine)
• Normally, the goal is to get
slash from 2-3 trees on a pile

• Piles are made by the strip
roads and machines should not
drive over the slash!
• Collecting slash is normally
made only on fertile spruce
clear cut sites
     28-09-2001/ SMa
Bundling Process
• The bundling machine will produce “slash logs” that are
  > 3m long and about 0,6-0,8m in diameter.
                                    diameter
• Bundles are wrapped with strings in every 40 cm.

A bundling
machine
produces about
20-30 bundles
per hour each
weighting avg.
0,4-0.7 tons.
        tons

Bundles at the Plant
Crushing or chipping of bundles is done at the
power plant, where the “green” chips are often
       plant
mixed with other energy material like bark, sawdust
and peat.

28-09-2001/ SMa
Bundle Benefits
• Extracted with standard forwarder
• Transported with standard on-road trucks
• Each bundle = 1-1.2 MW of energy
        (equals 80-100 L of oil)
• Handled like other assortments
(pulp wood, saw logs…)
• Easy to stock at roadside or at terminal
• Do not start to compost as easily as loose slash pile
• Not so sensitive to moisture (covering not required)
• Wind dried during storage time

Scenarios for tomorrow
Northern Europe: Southern Europe:
• big CHP plants like • small and medium
   Pietarsaari CHP plants
• industrial networks • municipal networks
connected for steam mainly connected for
   & electricity heating
• municipal networks
   connected for heating
 > economy of scale & > local needs &
   superior logistics flexibility

28-09-2001/ SMa
Different needs,
                different solutions
• The main idea is to develop some general
concepts that we can duplicate and adapt
  to very local conditions
• It means that a lot of parameters have to be
considered during the design phase of the
  product platforms
• Thanks to our very extended network of
  partners (FORENERGY, other projects and
local dealers), we should be able to come up
  with optimal solutions: economic,
  productive and environmental friendly!

  28-09-2001/ SMa
Conclusions
• The whole chain working at the moment for UPM-
Kymmene in Pietarsaari is very satisfying
(7 to 9 €/MWh). It consumes less than 3% of the
            MWh
  total quantity of energy produced.
• Timberjack energy technology (720 & Fiberpac) has
shown itself very well adapted for Scandinavian
conditions. Our goal is now to adapt it to southern
europe conditions taking into account all of its
  very particular characteristics (France, Italy,
  Spain, Austria, Germany, Eastern Countries…)

   28-09-2001/ SMa
The future is green!

  • 16. Vision of the team Once the logistics of the material chain will be optimised, power plants will be very efficient and clean, especially when designed to use only wood as their fuel. fuel It will also be possible to use the existing methods in harnessing energy-wood plantations that will thereby become more productive. productive We believe that these are the key elements to take bio-energy production to a competitive level for the first time ever. 28-09-2001/ SMa
  • 17. Objectives to conduct high level research on the development of renewable and clean bio-energy technology to model, develop and optimise the complete energy chain from the forest to the consumers to develop an energy system producing fuel for the power plant at a competitive price (<8 EURO/Mwh at the plant) to develop an energy system that is neutral concerning the CO2 emissions and which keeps other emissions on a lower level than what the regulations require to develop machinery and equipment to serve these purposes to conduct tests to demonstrate the applicability in several European countries 28-09-2001/ SMa
  • 18. Work division • The co-ordinator, Timberjack, will develop methods and machinery for collecting and handling the material. • UPM-Kymmene as an end-user will test the developed technology at their plants. • Shotton Paper and Caledonian Paper company will use and modify this technology for the UK plants. • Research involving methods, economics, logistics and emissions will be conducted by the partners in Austria, (ARCS), France, (CEMAGREF and AFOCEL) and Italy (IRL). • CEMAGREF will contribute to collecting equipment design and IRL will study the possibilities of adapting this technology to the Southern European conditions. ARCS will make a “LCA”, Life cycle assessment on the components of the chain. 28-09-2001/ SMa
  • 20. Milestones and expected results a new method of collecting the small wood and thinning residuals from forestry operations a new method of collecting the “normal” logging residuals left from commercial fellings fuel price at the power plant < 8 EURO/MWh neutral CO2 and nutrient balance together with minimised combustion emissions at least one working energy chain realised on the practical level at full industrial scale 28-09-2001/ SMa

  • 24. 720 Multifunction Collector Head 28-09-2001/ SMa
  • 25. Timberjack 720 benefits • Patented accumulation principle (up to 5/10 trees) • Tree cutting and handling standing vertical • Crane movements reduced to a minimum • Purpose designed knife (high degree of utilization) • Leveling cylinder & tilt function • Control system providing automatic functions for easy and efficient operation Mains dimensions Width with open grapples 830 mm Width with closed grapples 600 mm Total height 890 mm Weight without attachment 340 kg 28-09-2001/ SMa
  • 27. Logging, 1st step of Bundling Technology • While working, the harvester accumulates the slash on piles (faster to feed into bundling machine) • Normally, the goal is to get slash from 2-3 trees on a pile • Piles are made by the strip roads and machines should not drive over the slash! • Collecting slash is normally made only on fertile spruce clear cut sites 28-09-2001/ SMa
  • 28. Bundling Process • The bundling machine will produce “slash logs” that are > 3m long and about 0,6-0,8m in diameter. diameter • Bundles are wrapped with strings in every 40 cm. A bundling machine produces about 20-30 bundles per hour each weighting avg. 0,4-0.7 tons. tons 28-09-2001/ SMa
  • 29. Bundles Extraction by a Standard Forwarder 28-09-2001/ SMa

  • 41. Different needs, different solutions • The main idea is to develop some general concepts that we can duplicate and adapt to very local conditions • It means that a lot of parameters have to be considered during the design phase of the product platforms • Thanks to our very extended network of partners (FORENERGY, other projects and local dealers), we should be able to come up with optimal solutions: economic, productive and environmental friendly! 28-09-2001/ SMa
  • 42. Conclusions • The whole chain working at the moment for UPM- Kymmene in Pietarsaari is very satisfying (7 to 9 €/MWh). It consumes less than 3% of the MWh total quantity of energy produced. • Timberjack energy technology (720 & Fiberpac) has shown itself very well adapted for Scandinavian conditions. Our goal is now to adapt it to southern europe conditions taking into account all of its very particular characteristics (France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Germany, Eastern Countries…) 28-09-2001/ SMa
