Construction of Abak - Ikot
Ekpene Road, Addendum
Discharge Drain, Akwa Ibom
Client:
Akwa Ibom State Ministry
of Works and Transport
Construction Period:
01/2008 – 06/2011
Services:
Construction of 25km dual
carriageway
The Abak-Ikot Ekpene Road is a federal road
that connects the cities ofAbak and Ikot Ekpene
in Akwa Ibom State. Julius Berger Nigeria PLC
in 2007 got the rehabilitation contract for the
two existing lanes with a length of 25 km.
Due to the high traffic density between Abak
and Ikot Ekpene, the contract was extended in
2008. Following the client’s instruction the two
existing lanes were widened with two additional
lanes to a complete dual carriageway.
Furthermore, the road cross section was
extended to 2x7.40m including 4m median and
2.75m strengthened shoulders on both sides.
For the dualisation of the existing road,
extensive demolition works at buildings and
other structures in the townships of Abak and
Ikot Ekpene were necessary. All electrical
installations along the road were relocated or
newly erected.
After detailed studies of the existing traffic
density and with the consideration of increasing
traffic loads, the strengthening of the road
cross section was required. To realise this, a
15cm thick base-course layer was placed on
the standard binder course layer of 6cm with
an additional second asphaltic binder course
layer of 6cm. On these two binder course
layers the standard asphaltic wearing course
layer of 4cm was placed.
The improved cross section ensures a high
durability of the road under the expected high
traffic loads.
A drainage system of trapezoidal drains and
U-channels for road and surface drainage was
erected. In the townships of Abak and Ikot
Ekpene, walkways are installed on both sides
of the road.
To discharge the surface water inside the
township of Abak, the erection of a drainage
pipe diameter 2,000mm is planned. Due to
the existing geology and topography, this
pipe shall be build as micro tunnelling system
by pipe-jacking method. With this system no
earthworks or demolition works on the surface
are required. The pipe diameter of 2,000m has
enough capacity to discharge also further parts
of the town.
