The Roll Out of Next-Gen Gas Mask for the U.S. Army
1. The Roll Out of Next-Gen Gas Mask for
the U.S. Army
U.S. soldier shows he is stable inside the gas chamber.
Modern chemical warfare started on 22nd April, 1915, when soldiers of Germany used
poisonous gas to attack French in Ypres against Canadian and French troops. A soldier’s only
protection was to breathe through a piece of cloth or fabric. Therefore, gas masks were issued
to all troops to fight against the chlorine gas. Out of necessity, Dr. Cluny Macpherson, medical
doctor, came up with the idea of a mask made of long fabric and metal. He added a canvas
hood with eyepieces and a breathing tube in a helmet. This head protection tool was treated
with chemicals that would absorb the chlorine used in the gas attacks. After a few technical
improvements, the helmet became the best gas mask tool to be used by the army of the
British. This invention was an important protective item of the First World War, protecting
millions of soldiers from chronic diseases, blindness, and injury to their lungs and throat.
Currently, gas masks are used by millions of soldiers all across the world.
2. The new version of Gas Mask is Underway
The role of this next-Gen gas mask is underway, but researchers at the Army’s Edgewood
Chemical, Biological Center in Aberdeen, Maryland already have big plans for the next-Gen
model: An integrated helmet design will be equipped with a battery-powered, fan-driven air
filtration system. The modifications allow a blower to move air across the wearer’s face,
rather than having the soldier suck air through the fan-driven air filtration system. All these
new modifications will definitely overcome the stressful activities of soldiers, such as crawling
with a rifle and shovelling sand.
“With any respiration device or tool, comfort is an issue. There’s always a goal to try to
minimize that discomfort.” said Dan Barker. Dan Barker and his fellow members are in the
early stages of designing the modules of gas mask, which then would be blended with a next-
Gen helmet to complete the design. Unlike other gas mask helmets, this next-Gen gas mask
not only improves protection, but also creates a better seal on the mask, and circulates air for
a more comfortable experience.
