Shanghai, as a city, has a lot to offer visitors however, when the hustle and bustle gets too much there’s a few places nearby that offer a respite from the crowded streets. There’s lots of places near Shanghai that are relatively easy to get to but still offer a relief from the rat race that is the city. We’ve compiled a list that, while not exhaustive, is comprised of some of our favourite places and includes some of the lesser known treasures of the region.
2. Moganshan
National Park
This mountain park is beautiful in the summer, you can swim in the
fresh water lakes and explore beautiful bamboo forests.
How to get there: Either take a 4 hour bus direct from Shanghai to
Moganshan or get the high-speed train to Hangzhou and take a taxi
or bus to the mountain.
3. Nanjing
Nanjing is a beautiful city with a lot of history. The founder of
modern China, Sun Yat-Sen is buried in the city in the middle of an
expansive parkland area.
How to get there: Nanjing is only an hour and a half to two hours
away by high-speed train.
4. Huangshan
The Mountain is said to have been inspiration for the landscapes in
the Avatar film. Huangshan literally translates as Yellow Mountain
and s known as such because of the colour of the rocks.
How to get there: Overnight train from Shanghai Station to Tunxi at
the base of the mountain. You can get to Huangshan either by taxi
or bus
5. Chongming
Island
Chongming is only a 2 hour bus ride away from Shanghai but feels a
world away. It’s a great place for cyclists and bird watchers alike as
most of the island is wetland national park.
How to get there: Either by ferry from Baoyang Port or by bus from
Shanghai North Long Distance Bus Station.
6. Shengsi
Islands
It’s surprising that these islands are still relatively undiscovered by
both foreign and Chinese tourists alike as they offer beautiful sandy
beaches, clean seas and an abundance of delicious, fresh seafood.
How to get there: Buy a bus ticket from Shanghai Long Distance Bus
Station to Shengsi Island that includes the one and a half hour ferry
journey to Shengsi.
