making institutional walled-garden contents and interoperable user accounts

4. Problem
Citizens mainly use the service to access the Internet, private&bars still don’t
see the point for joining the stuff
Complexity of a city-wide sustainable model for joint development of
infrastructure&contents

5. Strategy
Use wireless space to promote new business models
Offer city users a unique experience, with growing free contents & apps
Use wifi experience to boost online services & mobile apps adoption
Engage with citizens & business with multiple different ways other than simple
connectivity (new app pre-views and “beta-testing”, innovation co-design,
socialmedia, opendata)

6. Solution
Formal federation among public bodies, with rules of the game:
o at least FirenzeWiFi SSID must be emitted
o splash page servers can be different, but the same layout must be
guaranteed
o user accounts can be different but interoperable
Formal relationships with private parties: they emit FirenzeWiFi around their
bar&lounge, they forget troubles about registration, accounting, etc.
Intermediaries may offer added value services on top of the existing wireless
infrastructure (upper banner is the entry point to their domain).

7. Reflections
Still pioneering in administrative & legal stuff
Lack of a proper business model for intermediaries as well as for
bar&restaurants
Pre-existing infrastructures & investments for content delivery and infrastructure
management, already in place by the different bodies. Sustainability of joint
digital free contents management among different public bodies through the city
