2. Summary
Throughout this entire course, I have only felt distain and resentment towards it.
Perhaps some of this information is useful to some people, but it was not for me.
The only unit that was marginally useful was the third where the specifics of
money were detailed. The issue, though is that when I asked other people about
it, it was revealed that the information was outdated. The majority of the
remaining components of this class were cases where simple common sense
could be applied. There were some areas in fact where I was confused about the
relevancy of an assignment. Especially the one about the interview. It makes little
sense why learning someone else’s life story would matter to preparing yourself
for a job interview. The section with the cover letter was useful in my specific
case because even though I am never going to send it, I now know that a video
game company that I like has an opening for the exact position that I want. It
gives me hope towards finding a job later.
3. Unit One
. The web 2.0 tool thing was more of an arbitrary rule than anything useful to me.
I didn’t reach out towards any other presentation media because it would take
more effort than it would be worth. I don’t like having to sign up for websites just
to find out that they don’t do the functions that I want from them so it was
better to just stick to PowerPoint and Prezi.
4. Unit 2
The unit on health was probably the second biggest waste of time. I had to make
presentations for each section and they were on things that we typically learned
in school for many years. I don’t know how it was for people when the virtual
planning website and its resources were put up, but anyone now could do this
section without ever reading the additional material.
5. Unit Three
The third unit, as I said, is a little outdated. I did however make me want to start a
savings account for myself, which is worth some points to it. The budget at the
end wasn’t very well integrated. Maybe something to include using the student’s
newfound knowledge of how credit cards and bank accounts work. As it is, it is
just a test of seeing if the student can find prices online and use a calculator.
6. Unit Four
The fourth unit was by far the most difficult. Or should I say the most tedious.
The section on quizzes was interesting. I don’t believe that they were particularly
accurate though. The interview was the most difficult. I am not in contact with
very many (read: any) people in the art industry so getting an interview was
difficult. The resume was interesting as it allowed me to think of and list all of my
high school achievements in one place. I think that the video thing was silly as I
cannot organize a session at a factory or with heavy machinery just to fool
around and pretend to injure myself.
7. Unit Five
I found the last unit to be relaxing after that, as it is mostly writing. I was annoyed
at the part with the work experience as I have already done MAPs and handed in
my thirty hours of work experience sheet. It was difficult to get another signature
and I am out of contact with the people who I did volunteer work for now.
8. Conclusion
I didn’t find the course particularly challenging and that isn’t what its aim is
anyway, but I also didn’t find it very helpful either which is a major flaw. I saw it
more as an obstacle to my graduation than a necessary learning tool to assist me
in the real world. I would like it to be more like a typical class, because at the
level it is now, most people think it is a joke. I want to learn new information like
financial terms, how to do taxes, techniques for stress relief, tutorials on different
web 2.0 tools, etc., then have tests and quizzes on them rather than the class
being project focused.
