Social media has been used to raise awareness for social and political issues through hashtags like #Ferguson and #DelhiGangRape. It has also been effective in fundraising, with the Ice Bucket Challenge raising $8 million in a few days in 2014. While social media is good at spreading awareness, volunteers and donations are still needed to create real change. Social media also helps humanize organizations and build communities around issues.
