Managing Spills and Potentially Infectious Materials
Spill Cleanup Procedures
PPE: Don disposable latex or nitrile gloves and additional long cuff
Nitrile over gloves. Heavy Duty leather gloves may be worn for
additional protection.
If the situation is severe, or if there is a large quantity of dangerous or
unknown material present, don disposable tyvek suit, goggles, optional
filtering facepiece (for odor), and protective face shield. If necessary,
rubber overboots can be worn over shoes.
CLEANUP:
♦ Pour absorbent compound around the perimeter of the spill
♦ Dilute the spill with an approved disinfectant or anti-microbial solution
♦ Clean the spill area using drop cloths, absorbent pads, or a
previously prepared spill kit
DISPOSAL: Solid materials, drop cloths, absorbent pads, and paper
towels used to clean up spill material, and disposable PPE, can be
contained in red hazardous waste bags and disposed in accordance
with the facility’s hazardous waste disposal procedures.
DECONTAMINATE: Clean all reusable equipment with detergent
followed by a germicide or mild bleach solution.
WASH HANDS THOROUGHLY: Recommended technique:
♦ Wet hands with running water
♦ Apply Handwashing agent over the entire surface of the hands
♦ Vigorously rub all hand surfaces for at least ten to fifteen seconds
♦ Rinse hands thoroughly with hot water
♦ Dry hands
