- It’s never a good day when you go to pick up your child at their child care center only to find out they had biten another child during the day and you probably have many questions running through your mind and your probably wondering what to do now?
- But that doesn’t mean as parents you should just kick your feet back and relax this presentation is to help you learn about why your child may be biting and will provide you with ways to get rid of this behavior...because though its common its deffinately not something to brag about.
- When it comes to biting it isn’t always nesicarry to know why your child is biting to stop the behavior but it may help so here are a few reasons that could possibly be what is triggering the biting.
- Biting can be triggered by many thing but the most common reasons are furstration,anger, fear, instict and tension
- One of the main reasons toddlers bite is because they are feeling afraid or frustrated. When they haven’t had their fill of close, relaxed time with their parents or caregivers, or when stress has risen in their lives, they may not express the fears or frustrations through natural outlets like crying and tantrums. To them, the situation doesn’t feel favorable for expressing lots of feelings. But the feelings rumble nevertheless, and when they become intolerable, biting can occur.
- Sometimes A toddler bites because a big wave of tension has suddenly flooded his brain. He doesn’t plan this, and he doesn't know how to stop it. Toddlers’ biting is like a sneeze or a cough—his body does it for internal reasons that aren’t under his control. Sometimes Toddlers biting can occrur because of internal reasons and can be extremely similar to a sneeze or a cough. It’s like a giant wave of tension has suddenly flooded the toddlers brain and the biting just happens and is completely unplanned and at the time the child doesn’t know how to stop it.
- So what do you do when your child bites someone
- When biting occurs Make sure you confront a child immediately after the biting has taken place if you wait too long to confront the child they will have already have forgoten why and even what they did. You have to get down the their level and look them right in the eye and let them know that this type of behavior is not exceptable
- More than likely a child knows what they have done immediately after they do it and they realize that they had just hurt someone even if they give you a blank stare.
- Another technique I have found helpful in my expeirence with toddlers is having the child who bites hold the ice on the child who got bit . This reiderates to the child that what they have done hurts and gives them a chance to appologize and try to regain trust from the other child.
- When it comes to children in general consistancy is key the best thing is for the parents and the child care center to work together to stop any types of negative behavior together and with the same action plan.
- In conclusion biting is extremely common among toddlers but it is a negative behavior that needs to be controlled. Biting can happen for many reasons like stress, anger and fear. Biting can be stopped if action is taken immeditaly after a child bites and the same action plan is being used at the child care center and at home because remember consistancy is key.
