29. In Galvanic/ Sacrificial Anode CP system the
high energy electrons required for CP are
supplied by the corrosion of active metal.
This is illustrated in the figure below.

supply of high energy electrons to stifle anodic
reactions on a metal surface.
These high energy electrons are supplied by a

THO stands for Technological, Human and Organizational
The conceptual study of Project-IX is underway to carry maximum gas beyond Multan , to facilitate gas consumers from all walks of life in central Punjab and Northern areas of the country. The basic intent of Project-IX is the elimination of bottle necks in SNGPL’s existing transmission network and to transport gas to independent Power Plants in Punjab province, through system up-gradation with loop lines and system compression enhancement, beside construction of pipelines to absorb additional gas available from gas sources of Potohar region and newly discovered Gurguri-Makori field in Karak District of Khyber Pakhtoon Khwa province.
Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) is the largest integrated gas company serving more than 3.4 million consumers in North Central Pakistan
The Company has over 46 years of experience in operation and maintenance of high-pressure gas transmission and distribution systems
SNGPL transmission system extends from Sui in Baluchistan to Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtoon Khwa (KPK) comprising over 7,347 KM of Transmission System (Main lines & Loop lines). The distribution activities covering 1,624 main towns along with adjoining villages in Punjab & Khyber Pakhtoon Khwa are organized through 8 regional offices. Distribution system consists of 67,449 KM of pipeline. SNGPL has 3,451,142 consumers comprising Commercial, Domestic, General Industry, Fertilizer, and Power & Cement Sectors. Annual gas sales to these consumers were 584,895 MMCF worth Rs. 168,933 million during Jul 08 - Jun 09.
There are 12 departments in SNGPL and it is difficult to discuss their hierarchy as it is similar to the other organizations, so we skipped it for the sake of simplicity
It is one of the most abundant energy sources in Pakistan
Comprised primarily of methane, natural gas is odorless and colorless when it comes out of the ground
Prior to distribution, a harmless odorant is added to the gas so any leakage can be easily detected before an unsafe situation occurs
it has a very narrow combustion range, igniting only when mixed with air at a ratio of between 4 and 14 percent
. It also requires a very high degree of heat, at least 1200 degrees Fahrenheit, before it will ignite
natural gas has become the environmental fuel of choice for many residential, commercial and industrial applications
28 gas resources in pakistan 1571 MMCFD production
4 in NWFP with 91 MMCFD production
8 in punjab with 150 MMCFD production
3 in balochistan with 475 MMCFD production
5 in sindh with 855 MMCFD production
SNGPL Gas Distribution department is responsible for the safe, reliable and efficient distribution of natural gas through the utility pipes to customers
Distribution department is distributing 1680 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) natural gas to 3.45 million customers in 1542 towns and Villages of Pakistan
There are 3.35 million domestic consumers, 52,242 commercial consumers and 5,953 industrial consumers
The skilled and trained staff is available in widespread regions and sub-areas to attend emergencies and customer complaints.
The department has a fully established and well equipped central metering workshop with latest flow proving, testing and meter calibration facilities
In distribution dept. there are many depts inside but we were sent to these departments. Now we will briefly describe their responsibilities and working procedures
Metering Department is responsible for accurate measurement of gas, operation and maintenance of all metering and regulating stations having following major scope of work.
Operation and maintenance of instruments like Valves, Regulators, Relief Valves, Electronic Volume Corrector, Meters etc.
Calibration of Instruments such as Pressure / Temperature Recorders, Calorimeters, Gauges etc.
Design of metering and Regulating Stations
Conduct raids to catch gas pilferage
Schedule meter replacement
Operation and Augmentation of Distribution network
Repair of all types of meters at Central and Regional meter shops
1. Fixed Factor Measurement: A very precise regulator is installed upstream of the meter which ensures fixed pressure to the meter all times. The temperature of gas is normally measured by the P/T recorder in the close vicinity of the CMS
Important Guidelines:
Regulator should have minimum droop (pilot operated)
Regulator should be properly sealed
Regulator should be adjusted at low flows i.e. within the capacity of the regulator at operating conditions.
Restricting orifice should be used at the downstream of the meter to avoid overloading of the meter/sudden jerk to the meter.
2. High Pressure Measurement: By the use of volume correctors / P/T recorders
The inlet pressure (metering pressure) is usually not fixed
Fluctuating line pressure enters into the meter (metering pess.)
The volume corrector or P/T recorder on the meter senses /records instantaneous line pressure and flowing temperature (EVCs only) and applies corresponding conversion factor automatically / manually in case of P/T recorders to compute standard volume at the base conditions.
The capacity of the meter enhances with increase in metering pressure.
If the line pressure is more than the MAOP of the meter / volume corrector, a suitable regulator should be installed upstream of the meter to set the pressure within the MAOP.
Important Guidelines:
Monthly volume correction ratio report must be prepared to check the performance of volume corrector
Monthly downloads of EVCs should be taken to check / analyze the data and any alarm conditions.
During site inspections, it is a good practice to note corrected and uncorrected readings at an interval of ½ to 1 hour and compute the metering pressure applied by the volume correctors which should be cross checked with physical metering pressure.
The pressure gauges to note inlet/delivering pressure should be installed downstream of the meter
In case of P/T recorders the monthly calibration of P/T recorders must be performed and consumer/his representative’s endorsement must be taken. This will help in resolving any billing disputes at the later stages.
Upstream Measurement with Volume Correctors
A Volume Corrector is mounted on the meter, which automatically applies Pressure/Temperature factors on the volume of gas registered by the meter to calculate corrected volume at Base Conditions.
There are three essential elements for a regulator.
To measure sense the desired level of control pressure
If the desired deviates due to changing conditions, there must be a device to change the flow of material in the system to suit the system conditions, usually this element is a variable restriction or a valve.
There must be some means of positioning the valve in response to the deviation detected by the sensing element.
Three basic regulator control actions normally encountered are: on-off, proportional action, proportional reset.
The Automatic Self Operated Regulator.
Three elements in this case are: -
Sensing Measuring element: diaphragm bourden tube etc.
Restricting Element: Variable restriction in valve, it could be single port, double port etc.
Loading Element: Weight spring etc
Corrosion is the electrochemical oxidation of metals in reaction with an oxidant such as oxygen. Formation of an oxide of iron due to oxidation of the iron atoms in solid solution is a well-known example of electrochemical corrosion, commonly known as rusting
Corrosion can be concentrated locally to form a pit or crack, or it can extend across a wide area more or less uniformly corroding the surface
methods to reduce the activity of the exposed surface, such as passivation and chromate-conversion, can increase a material's corrosion resistance
a technique to control the corrosion of a metal surface by making it work as a cathode of an electrochemical cell
Cathodic protection systems are most commonly used to protect steel, water or fuel pipelines and storage tanks, steel pier piles, ships, offshore oil platforms and onshore oil well casings
It shall ensure that quality standards are met according to requisite specifications, applicable codes and standards are laid down in the manuals of operational departments
