Literacy is defined as the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate, and write or type. Literacy has evolved over thousands of years from the early invention of writing to also include understanding. Illiteracy is the opposite of literacy and refers to not being able to read, write, or type and having a limited capacity for knowledge. The impact of illiteracy on a society is that it acts as an inhibitor to a country's development, as higher illiteracy rates make progress more difficult.
