1. Hearing Protection-Communication Headsets for Occupational Safety
Good communication is essential in every field, irrespective of the industry or business sector. When
communication system becomes a noise, it reduces the effectiveness of communication and may lead to
miscommunication with a negative impact on the given assignment. Exposure to noise will also lead to
hearing impairment, in individuals. With communication across geographical boundaries becoming the
key factor in achieving targets and providing solutions, all bandwidth of telecommunication wavelengths
seems to hit the human ear. Complying with workplace safety regulations is not just for prevention of
injuries but also includes protection of hearing and vision. One of the primary concerns in a globalized
industrial workforce today, is the damage to hearing capacity.
Technological innovation has also brought in a number of communication headset devices for high noise
environments. These new generation earplugs are innovatively designed, with a number of features
such as easy to use, clarity of speech and hearing protection. These earplugs enable face-to-face, two
way and cell phone communication and can be used in any work environments including hospitality,
entertainment or security sectors. In case of high noise environments such as mining or aviation sectors,
these earplugs can be used with cell phones to get optimized clarity in speech and hearing. Combining
the Bluetooth technology with advanced technology in the earplugs gives the clarity required when used
with cell phones.
For the manufacturing and construction industry workforce, safety earmuffs and earplugs are made
available. This new technology based earmuffs will bridge the gap between hearing protection and high
noise communication environments. Made to protect the ear from impact, intermittent and continuous
noise, the workers can also hear the surroundings while hearing speech.
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) recommends three basic types of hearing
protection, which are -
Foam earplugs
PVC ear plugs
Ear muffs or noise canceling headphones
Unlike the earplugs that fit in the ear canal, the safety earmuffs fits over the entire outer ear and forms
an air seal, blocking the entire circumference of the ear canal. The earmuff is held in place by an
adjustable band. However, blocking out too much sound is also not advisable, as the workers need to
be tuned to the work environment. Earmuffs are available with varying degrees of hearing protection.
These are :
· Noise blocking ear muffs
· Sound management ear muffs with features like alarm warnings
· Radio headphones.
