Kids are meant to move! The benefits of physical activity for children & youth are without limit.
In fact, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada, to achieve optimal growth and development, and to reduce risk of chronic disease, our kids need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day...and more is better.
Yet unbelievably, less than 15% of Saskatchewan children and youth are meeting minimum standards.
To address the issue of physical inactivity in Saskatchewan, a number of partners joined forces to create Saskatchewan in motion
Saskatchewan in motion is a province wide movement aimed at increasing physical activity for health, social, environmental and economic benefits. Bottom line, they aim to increase opportunities for our kids to be active.
If you are a parent, an educator, a community leader, caregiver, or policy maker...Saskatchewan in motion is calling on you to join the movement! If we all do our part, we can create a healthier future for our greatest asset....our kids.
Saskatchewan in motion promotes a simple solution to help kids achieve the recommended guidelines.Families, schools and communities must share the responsibility to ensure Saskatchewan children & youth get the required 60 or more minutes of physical activity they need EVERY DAY! If leaders, caregivers and role models at home, at school and in the community all do their part by making sure kids are getting 30 minutes of physical activity, 60-90 minutes can be easily achieved. The following video explains what we can all do to achieve just 30 minutes at home, at school and in the community.
Although the physical activity crisis has reached epidemic proportions and solutions can feel overwhelming, the good news is that individual and community action is making a difference! The Saskatchewan in motion movement can be found in more than 250 communities around the province....and it’s growing every day!
The in motion movement is the greatest asset in addressing the inactivity issue...but what is a movement?A movement is people like us all working together towards a common goal.
The in motion movement relies on all of us to provide leadership and support to each other as we work towards our goal to get kids moving!
And the good news is that there is help! The mandate of Saskatchewan in motion is to inspire, galvanize and connect the movement to take action. What that means is that Saskatchewan in motion works to inspire people to take action, provide tools, resources and research to support efforts, and facilitate connections to each other to share stories, link to experts, solve problems and celebrate success. For example…
Saskatchewan in motion inspires the movement to take action! By providing consistent messaging that targets key audiences through advertising, social media and community campaigns By translating research and other facts and stats to leaders and to the general public By recognizing and celebrating the achievements of individual leaders, communities and organizations that are making positive changes for physical activity. By leading advocacy efforts to rally the movement to speak out and take action.
Supporting community action is a key to success.By providing tools, resources, and training the in motion movement can work together to build and strengthen the leadership capacity it needs to create change.
Individual action is effective, but together we’re stronger!Never before have we had the tools to connect to one another like we can today.By sharing our challenges, our successes, our expertise and wisdom among each other we can strengthen the Saskatchewan in motion movement and increase the impact of our collective work.
The in motion web site is the movements “on-line community.” It is a place to gather information, share events and stories, talk to experts, offer some advice and stay connected.
