courses – with many more planned – has
seen Vietnam emerge as one of Asia’s new
golfing hotspots.

ietnam’s golfing
heritage rolls back to
1922, when a nine-hole
golf course was created
for a golf-mad Vietnamese
emperor. During tumultuous
times, golf was just a four-letter
word here, but recently, thanks
to various conspiring factors,
Vietnam is now one of Asia’s
fastest growing golf destinations,
emerging as a major golf tourism
hotspot. In fact, the International
Association of Golf Tour Operators
(IAGTO) declared Vietnam as
Asia and Australasia’s “Golf
Destination of the Year 2016.”
Vietnam’s courses currently
number around 35, but
government master plans are
aiming for over 110 nationwide by
2020.
This fascinating country
is also shaping up as a golfing
paradise with its diverse and
stunning topography and
challenging play, including
several links-style courses, an
unusual dimension for Asian
golfers. Increasingly, courses
– many of which are designed
by the world’s golfing greats
including Jack Nicklaus and Gary
Player – are bagging top awards.

TEE-ING OFF IN HANOI
Older stand-outs in the northern
region include the 36-hole Kings’
Island Golf Resort (http://
brgkingsislandgolf.vn), set on its
own private island in a lake,
accessible by speed boat, and
currently expanding into a massive
54-hole course facility. The other
is Van Tri (www.vantrigolf.com.vn),
North Vietnam’s first exclusive
members-only golf club, offering
premium course conditions
including Paspalum surfaces.
Hanoi’s new star player is
Korean-owned Sky Lake Golf and
Lake Resort (www.skylakegolfclub.
vn) nestled on Van Son Lake and
backed by stunning mountains. Its
two, contrasting 18-hole PGA-
standard courses, designed by

Golf Awards 2015. Comparable to
classic British links courses, this
18-hole, championship course –
designed by Greg Norman – weaves
through towering sand dunes, and
with 50-metre elevation changes
and strong onshore winds, tests
even the most seasoned golfers.
GOLF COAST VIETNAM
Fly to Danang International Airport
– one-hour from Hanoi and HCMC
or from several international
destinations (including Hong
Kong, Singapore and Seoul) – and
you’ve arrived at the gateway to the
Central Coast, Vietnam’s premier
golfing region and Asia’s rapidly
emerging golf destination. Golf
Coast Vietnam, as the area is called,
offers four world-class golf courses
built in the past seven years around
Danang, all within 45-minutes
driving distance of each other and
designed by some of the modern
golf-era’s greats. Throw in luxury
beachfront resorts and cultural
attractions, and Danang’s relaxed,
resort-style golf experience
becomes apparent.
When Danang Golf Club (www.
dananggolfclub.com) opened in 2010,
it became Southeast Asia’s first
links-style course, and thanks to
regional low-lying sand dunes, the
start of similar courses. Designed
by Greg Norman, the 18-hole
Dunes Course offers a challenging
championship layout criss-crossing
a sand-based, coastal landscape.
Accolades confirming its premier
status include “Best New Course
in Asia-Pacific 2011” and one of
four recipients of the IAGTO’s
Diamond Award 2014. Located
minutes away, also weaving
alongside historic China Beach,
is Montgomerie Links (www.
montgomerielinks.com), which
became the region’s first 18-hole
championship course and the
nation’s first PGA Golf Academy
when it was inaugurated in 2009.
Another acclaimed links-course,
albeit more landscaped than its
neighbour, is designed by Colin
Montgomerie. Launched in 2013,
Laguna Lang Co Golf Club (www.
lagunalangco.com) lies between
Danang and Hue, backed by
mountains in a spectacular bay
setting and ensconced within
Vietnam’s first fully-integrated
golf resort complex. Endorsed as
“Asia Pacific’s Best New Course
2013-2014” with Zoysia fairways
and Tiff Eagle greens meandering
through woodlands, paddy fields
and rocky outcrops, its designer,
Major champion Sir Nick Faldo,
declared this, “One of the most
special courses of my golf designer
career.”
The region’s latest offering,
Ban Na Hills Golf Club (www.
banahillsgolf.com) is designed by
former World No.1, Luke Donald,
who boldly declared, “This will
solidify Danang’s reputation
as one of Asia’s finest new golf
destinations.” Opened in March
2016, the 18-tour-calibre hole
course is set away from the
coastline at the foot of mountains,
offering a heady mix of natural
topography and vegetation.
Stretching 7,858 yards, it is
Vietnam’s longest layout yet,
complete with night golf.
IMG Worldwide, offer options of a
challenging members-only Lake
Course with diverse topography
and Sky Course, which opened in
2014 to the public and is suitable
for all golfing abilities. On Hanoi’s
outskirts, Vietnamese golf
management company Vinpearl
Golf is currently developing an
ambitious 54-hole layout, with
three courses designed by IMG
Worldwide and golfing legends
Gary Player and Sir Nick Faldo.
A SWINGING TIME
DOWN SOUTH
In the tropical south, Vietnam’s
main commercial hub Ho Chi Minh
City (HCMC) isn’t undergoing
as much golf development as
other regions, but with new
infrastructure completed around
the city’s perimeters, courses are
far more accessible – generally less
than an hour from downtown.
Among the original courses,
notables include Vietnam Golf and

Vietnam’s spectacular
southern coastline,
sunny climes and
booming golf
development offer
further golfing
opportunities. These
include two new
courses from Vinpearl
(www.vinpearlgolf.
com): Vinpearl Golf
Nha Trang, Vietnam’s
first island golf
course, part of a
huge resort complex
on Hon Tre Island
in Nha Trang Bay;
and Vinpearl Golf
Phu Quoc, a 27-hole
championship course
chiseled through
hardwood forests
on Vietnam’s largest
island.
Located
1,500-metres above
sea level in Vietnam’s
southern highlands,
Dalat Palace Golf Club
(www.dalatpalacegolf.
vn) is now one of
Asia’s oldest, loveliest
courses, crafted
through rolling hills
dotted with lakes and
pine trees. Dalat’s
cooler climate is
perfect for Vietnam’s
only bentgrass course
– the ultimate golf
playing surface.
Country Club (www.vietnamgolfcc.
com), established in 1994 as
Vietnam’s first 36-hole course
located only 20-kilometres from
the metropolitan area. It boasts
one of the most visitor-friendly
clubs, and is popular for its good
value green fees, informal approach
and country club facilities. Two
championship 18-hole golf courses
carved out of woodlands – one
designed by Major champion
Lee Trevino – offer contrasting
playing challenges. Twin Doves
Golf Club (www.twindovesgolf.com)
was exclusively members-only,
but has recently opened its three
nine-hole courses and deluxe
club facilities to the public. Newer
standouts include Korean-owned
Taekwang Jeongsan Country Club
(www.jeongsancc.com.vn), an 18-hole
course set on its own island in Dong
Nai River, conveniently reached by
a 30-minute speedboat.
Just a two-hour drive southeast
of HCMC, in seaside Ho Tram,
golfers will find one of Asia’s
hottest new courses nestled in a
massively integrated casino and
golf resort complex. Opened in
2014, The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip
( www.thebluffshotram.com) has
already been ranked as Vietnam’s
only course in Golf Digest USA’s
“World’s 100 Greatest Golf
Courses” list and “World’s Best
New Course” accolade at the World
