witnesses - behind the lines, in the
gym and out there on the road, long
before I dance under those lights.“

RING SIDE OBSERVATION
Innumerable viewing and observing the
bouts from the ringside had resulted in a
real life experience leading to
“Basic observations for Monitoring
safety for the art of boxing”.
These observations are only a basic
practical experience.

6. “I CANT SEE HIS EYES, BUT I CAN
WATCH HIS FEET”
•POSTURE-
•An erect, straight and confident posture on
entry of the boxer into the ring reflects all.
•Steps full of arrogance cannot conceal the
impatient nervousness of the boxer at the
start of the bout.

7. “I CANT SEE HIS EYES, BUT I CAN
WATCH HIS FEET”
•STANCE-
•A stance filled with confidence shows the
magnitude of boxers skill level and training
efforts .
•A good balance reveals all for a winner or else
a wide flat footed posture shows inadequately
prepared or an injured fighter. Thus a
progression to the staggering stance can lead
to head injury or other serious problems.

8. “I CANT SEE HIS EYES, BUT I CAN
WATCH HIS FEET”
•RING MOVEMENT-
•An alert observation is like seeing poetry in
motion.
•The art and grace of boxing is no more
evident than the floating skillful movements of
a dominant boxer like a flying butterfly and
without consulting the score sheets the winner
can easily be made out.
•A running boxer is a defeated boxer (unless
leading on points).
•A score can be imagined just by seeing the
position of the boxers. 8Boxing- Ring Side Observation- Dr Sahir Pall

10. “I CANT SEE HIS EYES BUT I CAN
WATCH HIS HANDS.”
•DEFENSE-
•It shows the safety and leads to a timely
cessation of the bout.
•An effective defense is an ‘final determining
factor ‘for a combat safety.
•Absence of defense from the bout shows the
winner has already emerged.
•It is better that a one sided bout should be
stopped one minute early than seconds late
for a big injury. 10Boxing- Ring Side Observation- Dr Sahir Pall

DEFENCE
12. “I CANT SEE HIS EYES BUT I CAN
WATCH HIS HANDS.”
•COUNTING AND THROWING PUNCHES-
•An active and busy boxer is rarely in
trouble.
•When a boxer is throwing punches,
we know that they are healthy and the
winner can be predicted by who is
throwing punches and who is busy in
the ring scoring points

13. “I CANT SEE HIS EYES BUT I CAN
WATCH HIS HANDS.”
•LOWERERING OF ARMS-
•Unless a boxer has an unconventional
style, a lowered arm means trouble.
•Fatigue and accumulated body blows
will take their toll and drop the arms,
leading to dangerous head flows, so it
always said, ‘Go for the body and the
head will follow’.

14. “FATIGUE FACTORS”
•TIE UP-
•It is no surprise that a tired boxer ‘tie-
up’ an opponent to slow the flow of
punches.
•A tired boxer will ride his opponent
while failing to work for additional
points.

15. “FATIGUE FACTORS”
•ACCUMULATING TRAUMA-
•If a boxer is getting ‘hooked-up’ and
accumulating facial swelling, small
cuts, bruises, bloody nose, torn cheek
etc, then the writing is on the wall.
•It shows the winner stays all through.
15Boxing- Ring Side Observation- Dr Sahir Pall
16. “FATIGUE FACTORS”
• STANDING ‘8’ COUNTS. –
•This is an addition to safety controls within
the boxing.
•Amateur boxing rules stipulate defeat
when a boxer receive ’8’ count in a single
round during the bout is a good rule.
•Getting an ‘8’ saves the boxer from
impending ‘knock-outs’ and ‘one sided
bouts’.

18. “EXTRANEOUS FACTORS”
•REFEREE LEVEL OF ALERTNESS-
•If a competent referee handles the bout,
the worries of a Doctor, coach and boxer is
assured at a lower level.
•If a skilled referee is hyper alert, it prevents
injuries but on the other hand if a good
referee is nervous that makes a doctor and
coach nervous.
•Their level of activity and alertness
reciprocates like a mirror, the flow of action
and concern.

19. “EXTRANEOUS FACTORS”
•CORNER RING ACTIVITY-
•At last nobody knows a boxer better than
his coach.
•If you focus on coaches facial grimaces,
smiles, intense posture or relaxed body, it
tells the story.
•If they are happy the doctor is happy.

21. “EXTRANEOUS FACTORS”
•CORNER RING ACTIVITY-
•If they are tense about the cut in that one
minute rest period, it tells what to count in
the next round.
•If you know the coaches you learn their
body language and predict the doubt and
injury.
•The result of the bout can be seen.

BOXING
Ring Side Observation
23. By understanding and utilizing the ’11 ring side
rules for monitoring safety’ as a referee, doctor or
a coach you can foresee the winners, losers and
the injuries. At the same time the sports, art of
medicine will be forever humbling, the time when
you think you know it all, the ever motivated loser
lands a lucky punch and knocks out his
overwhelmingly superior opponent.
