3. WhySolar?
Solar energy is derived from the sun’s radiation. The sun is a powerful energy source. Did you know that the energy that it
provides to the Earth for one hour, could meet the global energy needs for one year? We are able to harness only 0.001%
ofthatenergy.
There is a reason why solar energy has become a trending topic when talking about renewable. While it has been popularly
criticized for being expensive or not very efficient, solar energy has now proved to be very beneficial - not only for the
environment but also financially speaking. Additionally, due to the higher demand, the technology has been improved
considerably,turningintoaveryefficientsourceofcleanenergy.

Shade-free area required at different
plant capacities and panel efficiencies If
a 1 kW plant with 15% efficiency
panels requires 100 SF of rooftop
space, then a 1 kW plant with 12%
efficiency panels will require 125 SF
of rooftop space. We can extend this to
different combinations of rooftop plant
capacity and panel efficiency for our
understanding.
Solar radiation from the Sun’s
captured by solar panels, which
produces PV electricity and
sends it to the inverter.
Excess electricity produced by the solar
system is sent back to the public grid.
Your electrical meter will actually run
backwards
The inverter converts the PV elec-
tricity (DC, or direct current) to AC
(alternating current) electricity.
AC electricity is passed to the
home’s breaker box and then to
household outlets and appliances.
Calculate the Size of Solar Plant
Lets calculate it with simple maths:
AC rating = Average kWh (units) per month / 30
days / average sun hours per day
example: 903kWh per month / 30 days / 5 hours =
6.02 kW AC
DC rating = AC rating / derate factor (0.8 is
conservative, but a range would be 0.8 - 0.85)
example: 6.02 kW AC / 0.8 = 7.53 kW DC
Number of panels = DC rating / Panel Rating
(e.g. 250 W)
example: 7.53 kW x 1000 / 250 watt = 30.12 panels,
so roughly 30 250 panels
(30 x 250w = 7500 watts = 7.5 kW)
NOTE: to get your average usage, preferably
add up your last 12 months usage and decide
by 12 and then apply the above maths.
