Recently, more and more data and services are moving to the cloud, that has important implications for data management. This trend indicates that information systems are becoming more centralized, the size of data in the cloud grows thus there will be less need for exchanging data, one will rather exchange references to data items. In such settings, the access control, privacy, and provenance questions are becoming essential. Moreover, the data items will have more direct economic utility, as the storage, energy, and computational costs can be directly put in relation to money. In this vision data semantics also closely linked to economic utility: data items which one can interpret (beyond system limits), interlink and process automatically have certainly higher economic utility. PlanetData's role is to demonstrate useful ways of exposing data to foster the adoption of semantic technologies in the European Community. The Data Provisioning and Management presentation was presented by Zoltán Miklós (Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne) at the PlanetData project Kick-off Meeting on October 11, 2010 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
