For high-value, high-throughput sites, downtime can cost hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. Service architectures have baked lots of resiliency into apps, but databases and their system of record design are often vulnerable to single points of failure, bringing down entire systems. Worse still, when the database is recovered, there can be missing data. How many database transactions can your workload handle losing if your primary database goes down? There are many strategies to minimize MySQL downtime, usually using replication and redundant hardware. Often these systems involve some manual intervention and potential downtime as failover protocols take hold. Also, these strategies may be expensive and require redundant hardware. At Clustrix, we think there are alternative strategies that may be a better fit for modern apps in a MySQL environment. In our final Tech Talk in this series on scaling MySQL, we evaluate multiple HA strategies. The rapid growth of in-memory compute applications is not surprising given the tremendous performance gains they can offer. Jobs that used to take hours can now take minutes or seconds as they are no longer subject to the rotational and seek latencies of spinning media. While Flash memory provide some relief, it is still a hundred times slower than the DRAM that in-memory compute applications utilize as their primary storage. One drawback to in-memory compute applications is the high cost associated with DRAM. Not only are the acquisition costs an order of magnitude more expensive than Flash, DRAM consumes far more power. Power can be a significant issue in data centers besides contributing a major part to the operational costs. In addition, a single server has limited capacity for DRAM and datasets that are larger, need to find an alternate solution or cope with the nuisance of sharding. Furthermore, in order to utilize the maximum capacity of DRAM in a server, higher cost DRAM needs to be installed further escalating the cost of compute. We discuss a paradigm to allow in-memory computing applications to extend their capacity by utilizing Flash memory; often with minimal performance loss. We give examples of applications that have been modified to utilize the paradigm and show performance comparisons. We also discuss TCO and the relative cost per transaction of the different solutions.

My talk for JavaOne 2009 Abstract: Writing concurrent programs in the Java programming language is hard, and writing correct concurrent programs is even harder. What should be noted is that the main problem is not concurrency itself but the use of mutable shared state. Reasoning about concurrent updates to, and guarding of, mutable shared state is extremely difficult. It imposes problems such as dealing with race conditions, deadlocks, live locks, thread starvation, and the like. It might come as a surprise to some people, but there are alternatives to so-called shared-state concurrency (which has been adopted by C, C++, and the Java programming language and become the default industry-standard way of dealing with concurrency problems). This session discusses the importance of immutability and explores alternative paradigms such as dataflow concurrency, message-passing concurrency, and software transactional memory. It includes a pragmatic discussion of the drawbacks and benefits of each paradigm and, through hands-on examples, shows you how each one, in its own way, can raise the abstraction level and give you a model that is much easier to reason about and use. The presentation also shows you how, by choosing the right abstractions and technologies, you can make hard concurrency problems close to trivial. All discussions are driven by examples using state-of-the-art implementations available for the JVM machine.

A kinetic model for methyl formate oxidation is generated using our open-source Reaction Mechanism Gen- erator (RMG) software, supplemented with high level quantum calculations and transition state theory (TST). New rate coefficients are calculated for the decomposition pathways of methyl formate, methoxy-formyl (CH3 OC · O), and formyloxy-methyl (C · H2 OCHO), and hydrogen abstractions from methyl formate by H and methyl radicals. We compare the predictions to experimental data including previously unpublished shock tube ignition delays over a wide range of T and P, as well as atmospheric-pressure laminar burning velocities and low-pressure flame species profiles from the literature. Using RMG we investigate the effect of changing the small molecule (C0−C1) “seed mechanism” and show that predictions of all the experiments are sensi- tive to these reactions. Until the small molecule chemistry is resolved it is impossible to have a conclusive mechanism for the fuel molecule oxidation.
