The Canon Powershot S5is is an 8-megapixel digital camera with a 12x optical zoom lens equivalent to a 36-432mm lens on a 35mm camera. It has an SLR-like design with an articulating LCD and features both automatic and manual shooting modes. The camera's 8-megapixel sensor uses pixels that are each 1 millionth of a meter to capture images. For beginners, the camera should be used in Auto mode, with the zoom lever used to frame shots which are taken by pressing the shutter button.

3. What’s a mega pixel?
•In digital imaging, a pixel (or picture element) is a single
point in a raster image.
•The pixel is the smallest addressable screen element, it is
the smallest unit of picture which can be controlled.
•The word pixel is based on a contraction of pix ("pictures")
and el (for "element");
•A megapixel (MP) is 1 million pixels, and is a term used not
only for the number of pixels in an image, but also to express
the number of image sensor elements of digital cameras
• therefore the Canon Powershot S5is uses 8,000,000 pixels
to take a picture
• this about the same contrast as a 35mm 400iso film (medium
speed 35mm film)
