Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, Ruapehu, and Taranaki were mountain gods in New Zealand that lived near the beautiful maiden Pihanga. While the others respected her choice of Tongariro, Taranaki's advances led to a mighty conflict between him and Tongariro. Defeated, Taranaki tore himself from his roots and fled south, leaving a long wound in the earth. He finally rested alone in the north, while a stream from Tongariro healed the land.
