Analysis Year 10
1. GEOGRAPHY COURSEWORK ANALYSIS Your analysis is concerned with comparing the four streets to see which has the most characteristics of a CBD. Take each of the different CBD criteria in turn (see your list in your theoretical background) and use the criteria as subheadings: e.g. PEDESTRIAN COUNTS “ The CBD is often the busiest part of a town or city and therefore it is expected that the focus of the CBD would have the highest pedestrian counts” Then go on to compare the pedestrian counts for the four streets - e.g. a simple BAR CHART with the 4 pedestrian counts on. - Describe what shows – i.e. compare the streets- highest count / lowest count and discuss / suggest explanations for what is shown – i.e. is it what expected? Can you explain it? Etc.
2. This is Description Broadway had one of the highest pedestrian counts, it was a little higher than Bridge Street at 36 as compared to 24. Market Hill had the highest pedestrian count at 54 and Station Road had the least number of pedestrians. This can easily be turned into analysis: Broadway had one of the highest pedestrian counts this may have been due to…. , it was a little higher than Bridge Street at 36 as compared to 24. However I would expect this to be higher because.. Market Hill had the highest pedestrian count at 54… this is more characteristic of a CBD. The particularly high count in this area may be explained by… Station Road had the least number of pedestrians this is likely to be because..
3. This is Analysis “ Our count of the Broadway also encompassed part of Crown Street, so the numbers may be higher than they would be but I do not think it will make a serious difference, as most people that part of Crown Street were either walking through to or coming from the Broadway. The Broadway attracts quite a lot of pedestrians because it leads to the Waits, where many people go to sit and look at the river, and because it is an access road for pedestrians to Bridge Street and the main town. Bridge Street itself was not much less busy than the Broadway, but most of the people were not just passing through, but visiting the shops. “
4. BRIDGE STREET MARKET HILL STATION ROAD BROADWAY Where appropriate you can put maps / photos side by side and annotate them to help make comparisons and discuss the differences / significance.
5. A map to show the location of Department and Chain stores in St Ives REMEMBER – AEGIS has a search function – therefore you can ask it to plot just certain types of land-use that you might associate with a CBD – likewise if you wanted you could ask if to show the tallest buildings – see your instruction sheets for how to do this!
