“Let children read whatever they want and then talk about it with them. If
parents and kids can talk together, we won't have as much censorship
because we won't have as much fear.” ~Judy Blume

“The dirtiest book of all is the expurgated book.” ~Walt Whitman

“Librarians and governing bodies should maintain that parents—and only
parents—have the right and the responsibility to restrict the access of their
children—and only their children—to library resources. Censorship by
librarians of constitutionally protected speech, whether for protection or for
any other reason, violates the First Amendment.” ~ American Library
Association Office of Intellectual Freedom
Some Statistics to Consider
Why is book challenged?
Who initiated the challenge?
Where did challenge occur?
Drawing some conclusions
 Schools and school libraries are often the scene of the crime

 Sexual content, violence, and “language” are often the cause cited

 Parents are often at the center of the challenge

 The number of challenges appears to be on the decline

 So, we decided to do our own survey just to confirm our hunches.
