Coping with Hearing Loss
When you find yourself with a hearing loss, you must first acknowledge its existence
and then work with others to maintain a normal life. It can be difficult, but this step
will help you to make the most of what you have, instead of ignoring your
difficulties.
Remember that your hearing loss will certainly be a difficult thing to overcome, but
that you are not alone. By finding the support you need, you will be able to make the
most of your condition and live your life to the fullest.
Hearing Aids—One tool For Coping with Hearing Loss
In many cases, simply having the right set of hearing aids is the best way to deal
with hearing loss. As you look for the best hearing aids for your ears, make sure to
ask the right questions, and choose a
hearing doctor that you trust.
Make your hearing a priority and
choose hearing aids that are fitted to
your ears with the help of a hearing
professional with proper certification.
Remember also that your hearing aids
will certainly help your hearing to
improve, but they will not completely
correct your hearing loss.
Cochlear Implants—A Good Option for Some
Some people who have experienced hearing loss are good candidates for cochlear
implants. Unlike hearing aids, they stimulate your auditory nerves and bypass the
damaged parts of your ears.
Cochlear implants are not right for every situation, and are not the best option for
those for whom hearing aids work well. To get a cochlear implant, you must meet
with an audiologist to ensure you are a good candidate.
Other Tools for Hearing Loss
There are also other tools such as visual alarms that can be used instead of auditory
warnings. These can be used as part of your alarm clock, or even your fire alarm
and other important warnings that hearing people often take for granted.
Coping on Your Own
Even without hearing aids, there are plenty of things you can do to maximize your
understanding. Some of these options are as simple as letting the person you are
speaking with know of your difficulty.
Tell your friends and family members that it is helpful for you to speak to someone
you are facing directly, in a quiet area. Also let them know that they should get your
attention before talking, and make sure that they know what will make you most
comfortable and understanding.
And in turn, make sure that they try to speak clearly and at a good volume (not
shouting) They should also keep their mouth visible and be patient as you converse.
This will ensure that you will both have the best communication possible.
Tips for the Person with Hearing Loss to Communicate with Hearing People
As you take advantage of caption call captioned telephone and other hearing
services, you will begin to see the light in your path. Remember that you can have a
full life, even with your difficulties.
