FOOD is a very important product ... it is an essential of life. The food system has evolved over time into a massive oligopoly dominated by just a few very large companies. This is not good for consumers, but very much suits decision makers working to maximize profit. It is not at all clear whether these big companies have any interest in the stakeholders other than the stockholders. The organization Food and Water Watch has compiled some very useful data about this issue.

18. SOME INITIAL THOUGHTS …
Food is one of the most important components of the
socio-enviro-economic system … without food people
cannot live. The food industry has become so
concentrated that it has “oligopolistic” pricing power
which never favors the consumer.
But it is not only price that is a problem. The food
companies have been using “food science” to create
addiction and craving that are not in the best interest of
consumers and their wellness.
MULTI DIMENSION IMPACT ACCOUNTING
19. These very large organizations are not very responsive to
small scale consumer activism. It is extremely difficult to
hold them to account for anything. They are able to say
one thing and do another almost with total impunity. It
takes a big movement to have a significant impact on
their “bottom line” sufficient to get the attention of the
companies' decision makers.
Integrated impact reporting along the lines of MDIA will
make a difference, together with more knowledge in the
hands of consumers and applications that reward
consumers for better decision making about food. In the
end it is consumers that will change these very big
oligopolistic companies!
