A priest had a dream. He was on his way to heaven. Before him there stretched a long flight of stairs. As he started to go up, he was given a piece of chalk and told that he must put a chalk mark on each of the steps for each sin he had committed. When he was about halfway up he met a bishop coming down. He inquired as to why his Lordship was returning, and the bishop answered, “I’m just going back to get some more chalk!”
The sin was a work of darkness. All sin is, and most sin is actually done under the cover of darkness. An attempt is made to hide it from wife, husband, mother, father, employer, class-mate. The man and woman thought what we all often think—that their sin would never be discovered, that no one would ever find out. But they overlooked two things that we all ignore: in the vast majority of cases, sin has been discovered; and sin, the very act of it, is always seen by God. The sin took place at the time of the feast, where the atmosphere was party-like and where men and women were brought together by drinking and dancing and the indulgence of the crowd. Such an atmosphere corrupts even those with the best intentions and the highest morals. — Preacher's Outline and Sermon Bible - Commentary Isaiah 42:1-4 A grandfather found his grandson jumping up and down in his playpen, crying at the top of his voice. When the grandson saw his grandfather, he reached up his little chubby hands and said, “out, grandpa, out.” it was only natural for the grandfather to reach down to lift him out of his predicament, but as he reached for the little boy, the mother stepped in and said, “no, you are being punished – so you must stay in.” The grandfather was at a loss to know what to do. The child’s tears and chubby little hands reached deep into his heart. But the mother’s firmness in correcting her son must not be taken lightly. Love found a way. The grandfather could not take the grandson out of the playpen, so he climbed in with him.
The religionists saw a chance to test Jesus, so they took the woman before Him, hoping to discredit Him. Þ If Jesus said the woman was not guilty, He would be breaking Jewish law and be leaving Himself open to the charge of being too lenient with sin. Þ If Jesus said the woman was guilty and should be killed, He would be breaking Roman law which did not consider adultery a sin worthy of death. He would also be criticized as lacking mercy and love, compassion and forgiveness. — Preacher's Outline and Sermon Bible – Commentary There was a sinful spirit among all these involved, a spirit... · of self-righteousness that lacked forgiveness · of criticism that lacked love · of judging that lacked compassion · of censoring that lacked understanding · of condemning that lacked sympathy · of punishing that lacked restoration · of savagery that lacked curing · of destroying that lacked the second chance There was hypocrisy. They felt and claimed that they were religious, better than the woman, free from any sin serious enough to be exposed. They even used Scripture to condemn her sin and to support their right to condemn her.
Hosea 14:9 (NIV) 9 Who is wise? He will realize these things. Who is discerning? He will understand them. The ways of the LORD are right; the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them. Matthew 7:24-27 (NIV) 24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." 2 Timothy 3:12-17 (NIV) 12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. James 3:17 (NIV) 17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
A man was in an accident, and his shoulder was slightly injured, but he decided he could "stick" the insurance company for a nice bit of money. He hired a lawyer who would go along with the plan, and they ended up in court. The insurance company’s lawyer asked, "Mr. Smith, please show us how much your shoulder was injured by the accident by extending that arm upward as far as the shoulder will allow it to go.“ The man obliged by raising his arm to a horizontal position and stopped. "That’s it.“ Then the lawyer said, "Mr. Smith, will you now please show us how far you were able to raise that arm before the accident.“ Again the man obliged and quickly raised his arm to the vertical so it was pointing directly toward the ceiling. Tell the story of the grandson killing the duck and trying to hide it. Philip Yancy, in his book “What’s So Amazing About Grace?” comments that this accident illustrates that the world is not divided into righteous and unrighteous people but into sinners who admit that they are sinners and sinners who deny that they are sinners.
We don’t have to live in our past. We don’t have live with the label. We don’t have to live a life that is powerless in the face of temptation and sin. We are chosen for something more. Experience grace…know today that whatever wrong you have done, no matter what it is, or what people think, can be forgiven; for Jesus has paid the penalty for your sin, and He freely offers you an acquittal. Experience grace…know today that God is willing to let the past be the past if you are willing to “go and sin no more;” He gives grace to enable you to be what you are intended to be. Exhibit grace…once you have experienced grace, it is now time to show it; we too are to be people of grace and see each individual the way God does, as a person needing unconditional love. Jude 1:24 (NIV) 24To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy
