3. Contd..
One of the world’s deadliest
viruses that has claimed
nearly 5,200 lives, Ebola has
now reached the Indian sub-continent.
It has a fatality rate
of up to 90%, making it a
nightmare for health officials
4. Contd..
The incubation period,
or the duration from
infection to onset of
symptoms, is from two
to 21 days. Patients
become contagious
once they develop
symptoms
6. Provision Outbreaks
EBOLA was first reported in
1976 in two simultaneous
outbreaks, in Nzara, Sudan
and Yambuku, Republic of
Congo. The latter was in a
village situated near the
Ebola river from which the
disease takes its name.
7. RECENT OUTBREAK IN
WEST AFRICA

Liberia 6,878
Sierra Leone 5,586
Guinea 1,919
8. TRANSMISSION
Ebola can spread by direct contact with blood or
bodily fluids from:
A person who is sick or who has died of Ebola
Objects like needles that have been in contact with
the blood or bodily fluids of a patient
Ebola cannot spread in the air or by water or food

(Most deaths have taken
place in West African
countries. US has reported
two deaths)
10. Contd..
There are five known strains of Ebola virus. Bundibugyo, Zaire
and Sudan strains have been associated with large EVD
outbreaks in Africa, whereas Reston and Tai Forest have not.
The first case in India has the Zaire strain.
Avg fatality rate:-
Zaire 78%
Sudan 53%
Bundibugyo 27%
11. EXPERIMENTAL THERAPY
There is no drug or vaccine for treating Ebola virus. ZMapp, being
developed by a private pharmaceutical company, is an experimental
treatment. It was arranged privately for the American missionary who
contracted the virus in Liberia and is said to have benefitted from the
same.
12. TREATMENT
OPTIONS
Standard treatment for Ebola remains supportive therapy. This includes
the following measures:
Balancing the patient’s fluids and electrolytes; maintaining their
oxygen status and blood pressure; treating them for any complicating
infections
In addition, the most effective way to stop the current Ebola
outbreak in West Africa is meticulous work in finding Ebola cases,
isolating and caring for those patients, and tracing contacts to stop
the chains of transmission
Safe burial practices and having healthcare workers strictly follow
infection control in hospitals is also important
