• A few weeks ago when a newborn was rushed to Ram Manohar
Lohia (RML) Hos pital for emergency treatment the doctors refused
admission citing lack of ICU beds. Later they clarified the family did
no wait. But when it comes to VIPs the hospital is willing to go the
ex tra mile.In a recent circular, a copy of which is with TOI, the
medica superintendent of RML warned the doctors of action if they
han dle the VIPs in a casual way .
• “It has been observed tha VIP reference has not been at tended
properly and handled in a very casual way by the doctors on duty at
trauma centre and other emergency area. This type of at titude of
doctors are being viewed very seriously and they are instructed that
they should be cordial with patients on top priority ,“ the official
order stated. It added, “If such inci dences are reported to the
under signed again, then necessary ac tion will be taken.“

• TOI spoke to officials in the emergency department who said the
circular was issued in May following certain complaints “Some of
the MPs had raised the issue with the hospital author ities following
which directions have been issued. We haven' asked to treat the
VIPs at the cos of services for general public,“ an official claimed.
• But senior resident doctors said they are often laden with VIP
requests. “It is difficult to treat VIPs or cases referred by them on
priority basis in the emergency department. All the patients coming
for trauma ser vices are needy and we canno neglect any ,“ said a
doctor.
• The requests from ministers and MPs are common even at AI IMS.
“There is a special protoco division in the institute to dea with VIP
requests,“ said an offi cial. “There are several instances where the
doctors are asked to visit the VIPs at home for medi cal
examination. It is never men tioned on record though,“ said a
doctor at RML hospital.
