Zalandos AI-driven products and distributed landscape of analytical data marts cannot wait for long-running, hard-to-recover, monolithic batch jobs taking all night to calculate already outdated data. Modern data integration pipelines need to deliver fast and easy to consume data sets in high quality. Based on Spark Streaming and Delta, the central data warehousing team was able to deliver widely-used master data as S3 or Kafka streams and snapshots at the same time. The talk will cover challenges in our fashion data platform and a detailed architectural deep dive about separation of integration from enrichment, providing streams as well as snapshots and feeding the data to distributed data marts. Finally, lessons learned and best practices about Delta's MERGE command, Scala API vs Spark SQL and schema evolution give more insights and guidance for similar use cases.

Adoption of the cloud will not start with the core enterprise applications. There are several ways to start the adoption. One is to move in from training environments through development and test to production. Another takes the importance of applications into consideration, starting with secondary, supporting systems. The approach discussed in this session is to start with edge systems that are already in the DMZ, on the fringes of an enterprises, where they engage in interaction with the outside world. Systems on the edge of an enterprise have special challenges regarding availability, scalability, security and external interactions with systems or people. This applies for example to external portals, B2B interactions, workflows that involve external actors, mobile APIs and integrations with SaaS instances. These systems are obvious candidates to move to a public cloud - and handle these special requirements on the PaaS platform. This session discusses and demonstrates a number of Oracle PaaS Cloud Services, their mutual interaction and how they can be leveraged to move these systems over the edge and into the cloud: Java Cloud Service, Integration Cloud Service, Process Cloud Service, IoT CS, Mobile Cloud Service, SOA Suite Cloud Service and Message Cloud Service. We will go over a number of scenarios for moving edge systems from on premises to the public cloud. Essential in this discussion is of course the integration from the edge system in the Oracle Public Cloud to the on premises backend systems.

Most data visualisation solutions today still work on data sources which are stored persistently in a data store, using the so called “data at rest” paradigms. More and more data sources today provide a constant stream of data, from IoT devices to Social Media streams. These data stream publish with high velocity and messages often have to be processed as quick as possible. For the processing and analytics on the data, so called stream processing solutions are available. But these only provide minimal or no visualisation capabilities. One was is to first persist the data into a data store and then use a traditional data visualisation solution to present the data. If latency is not an issue, such a solution might be good enough. An other question is which data store solution is necessary to keep up with the high load on write and read. If it is not an RDBMS but an NoSQL database, then not all traditional visualisation tools might already integrate with the specific data store. An other option is to use a Streaming Visualisation solution. They are specially built for streaming data and often do not support batch data. A much better solution would be to have one tool capable of handling both, batch and streaming data. This talk presents different architecture blueprints for integrating data visualisation into a fast data solution and highlights some of the products available to implement these blueprints.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (also known as Industry 4.0) is the ongoing automation of traditional manufacturing and industrial practices, using modern smart technology. Event Streaming with Apache Kafka plays a massive role in processing massive volumes of data in real-time in a reliable, scalable, and flexible way integrating with various legacy and modern data sources and sinks. In this presentation, I want to give you an overview of existing use cases for event streaming technology in a connected world across supply chains, industries and customer experiences that come along with these interdisciplinary data intersections: • The Automotive Industry (and it’s not only Connected Cars) • Mobility Services across verticals (transportation, logistics, travel industry, retailing, …) • Smart Cities (including citizen health services, communication infrastructure, …) All these industries and sectors do not have new characteristics and requirements. They require data integration, data correlation or real decoupling, just to name a few, but are now facing massively increased volumes of data. Real-time messaging solutions have existed for many years. Hundreds of platforms exist for data integration (including ETL and ESB tooling or specific IIoT platforms). Proprietary monoliths monitor plants, telco networks, and other infrastructures for decades in real-time. But now, Kafka combines all the above characteristics in an open, scalable, and flexible infrastructure to operate mission-critical workloads at scale in real-time. This session introduces Apache Kafka, an event-driven open source streaming platform. Apache Kafka goes far beyond scalable, high volume messaging. In addition, you can leverage Kafka Connect for integration and the Kafka Streams API for building lightweight stream processing microservices in autonomous teams. The Confluent Platform adds further components such as a Schema Registry, REST Proxy, KSQL, Clients for different programming languages and Connectors for different technologies. The session discusses how tech giants like LinkedIn, Ebay or Airbnb leverage Apache Kafka as event streaming platform to solve various different business problems and how to create a scalable, flexible microservice architecture.
