This document discusses how the student's media product uses and develops conventions of real drama films and media products. Specifically:
- The student chose to create a drama film trailer, which influenced choices of shots (close-ups, long establishing shots) and pace of editing to match drama genre conventions.
- Conventions the trailer develops include realistic characters/locations/situations and a dramatic storyline to make the audience emotional.
- The opening shot establishes the location to immediately spark audience interest, as drama films conventionally do.
- The poster was influenced by the 'Fish Tank' poster to keep it simple but effective, using a dramatic mysterious image without direct eye contact, drawing inquisitiveness.

Question 1
1. Question 1.
In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
2. In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
For my trailer I had decided for it to be a drama film. My decision was influenced by
previous viewings of other drama films. The main one being ‘My Sisters Keeper’. This
film was very successful and is a very well known film. When researching into the
drama genre, I started to discover the ways that they are filmed and edited, such as
camera shots and the pace of editing. I noticed that the camera shots involved lots of
close ups, and also the editing wasn’t fast paced, compared to horror or action
movies. By choosing the drama genre, this also meant that it wasn’t to much of a
hard task when having to find appropriate locations to film.
3. Conventio
ns•Realistic situations, characters and locations. this is done so that the storyline is
relatable for the audience.
•We follow the journey of the character developing.
•Dramatic storyline is put in place to make the audience emotional.
•Main storyline is the conflict. This includes realistic struggles that an individual may
face. Such as difficulty, death or pain. (In any form.)
4. My trailer
One of the most important factors of
complying with other real media texts is the
type of shots that are used. Before filming
my trailer I identified the different types of
shots that are commonly used in drama
films. I found that these regularly were
close ups to show the emotion of the
characters and also long establishing shots
to set the scene and to show the location.
I included these shots to help represent the
genre of my trailer.
As my trailer is drama genre, I used a
long establishing shot in the opening scene
of my trailer as the location is in a
relatable place, which hopefully immediately
sparks the interest of the audience.
5. Poster
The poster for the film ‘Fish
Tank’ influenced me when it
came to producing my own.
I tried to do similar
conventions of the poster,
with things such as the
image, star ratings and
keeping it simple but yet
effective.
I thought that the image was
very dramatic and
mysterious, as she is not
looking at the camera, I
think that this would draw in
an audience as it would
make you feel very
inquisitive, about what is
going to happen.
6. Magazine cover
A real media product that I used to give me
influence when making my own poster, was
the ‘Total Film’ magazine cover.
Although the image on the total film cover is
a different genre than mine. I thought the
layout was very professional looking, yet not
too professional and sophisticated, to have
no appeal to my younger target audience.
As you can see, I tried to keep the headings
and mast head of a similar style when
creating my own cover. I thought the image
was very striking. Looking directly into the
camera is one of the main conventions of
magazine covers, therefore this is what I
asked the model to do in my image.
