LIONS
The Lion lives in Africa.
The male lion is larger
than the female. Only the
male has a mane of long
hair. Lions have very
strong jaws. They can kill
a zebra or an antelope
with one sharp bite. They
are very fast and can
jump long distances.
Lions sleep as much as
nineteen hours a day.

TIGERS
Tigers live in jungle
swamps or tall grasses of
Asia. One kind lives in
Siberia. Tigers are stronger
and larger than lions. They
are very smart and brave.
They hunt for food at night.
Only when a tiger is very
hungry will it look for food
when it is light. Tigers can
swim and climb trees when
they have to. They can also
jump as high as fifteen feet.

LEOPARDS
Leopards live in the forests
of Asia and Africa. They are
very fast runners, good tree
climbers, and good jumpers.
Leopards hunt at night. The
mother leopard has from two
to four cubs or kittens. She
teaches them to hunt and to
watch out for enemies.
Leopards are full grown
when they are three years
old.

CHEETAH
The Cheetah is also
called the hunting
leopard. It is so easy to
tame that hunters can
train it to catch animals
for them. The Cheetah is
tall with long legs. It can
run as fast as seventy
miles an hour for short
distances. Cheetahs can
jump as high as twenty
feet.

JAGUAR
The Jaguar is found in
the wilds of Mexico and
South America. In many
ways, The Jaguar looks
like a Leopard. It is light
yellow with dark, circle
like spots. Jaguars hunt
wild animals on the
ground. They also go
into water to catch
fish, turtles, and water
snakes.

LYNX
The Lynx has a
thick coat of fur.
Snowshoe Rabbits
are it's favorite
food. But when it is
hungry it will eat
squirrels, mice, foxe
s, and other small
animals.

OCELOTS
Ocelots live in the forests
of North and South
America. Ocelots have
dark markings on their
heads, necks, and bodies.
They look so much like
small tigers that they have
at times been called
leopard or tiger cats.
Ocelots eat rats, mice,
snakes, lizards, and other
small animals.

PUMAS
Pumas are found in South
America and North
America. Pumas are also
called mountain lions,
cougars, and sometimes
even panthers. The
mother has two to four
kittens who are born with
dark spots over their fur.

BOBCATS
Bobcats are found in North
America. They are shy
animals and are not seen
often. The color of the fur of
these wild cats differs in
different parts of the country.
Swamps, Forests, Deserts, a
nd Mountains are home to
the Bobcats. They are good
hunters. Rabbits are their
favorite food, but they can
climb trees to get birds and
other small animals.

MARGAY
The Margay is a spotted cat
native to the Americas.
Named after Prince
Maximilian of WiedNeuwied, it is a solitary and
nocturnal animal that prefers
remote sections of the
rainforest.

JAGUARUNDI
The jaguarundi (Puma
yagouaroundi syn. Herpailurus
yagouaroundi), also called eyra
cat, is a small-sized
wildcat native
to Central and South America. In
2002, the IUCN classified the
jaguarundi as 'Least
Concern', although they
considered it likely that no
conservation units beyond the
megareserves of the Amazon
basin could sustain long-term
viable populations.

CARACAL
The caracal, also known as
the desert lynx, is a wild cat
that is widely distributed
across Africa, central Asia
and southwest Asia into
India. In 2002 the IUCN
listed the caracal as Least
Concern as it is widespread
and relatively common.

KODKOD
The kodkod, also called
guiña, is the smallest cat in
the Americas and also has the
smallest distribution, being
found primarily in central
and southern Chile and
marginally in adjoining areas
of Argentina

Abyssinian
The Abyssinian is a natural
breed of domesticated cat
believed to originate from
one Egyptian female kitten
called Zula that was taken
from a port in Alexandria,
Egypt, by a British soldier
and brought to England.

Applehead siamese
Appleheads came about after
years of selective breeding
during which Siamese
breeders strove to produce a
longer, thinner, more
extreme-wedge look in their
show cats.

American Keuda
The American Keuda has
some pronounced similarities
with the Egyptian Mau
breed, including body
type, habits, and a belly
flap, not seen in other breeds.
Since the belly flap allows
extra extension when
running, and thus more
speed, this would be a
successful adaptation for any
cat that needed speed

American Longhair
The American Longhair /
Maine Coon is a large-sized
cat. Its coat is can come in a
different variety of colours.
Like the breed name
suggests, they have long
hairs.

American shorthair
The breed is believed to be
descended from English cats
(the forebears of today's
British Shorthairs) brought
to North America by early
European settlers to protect
valuable cargo from mice
and rats.

American wirehair
The first wirehair cat
appeared as a random cat
mutation among a litter of
six born to two barn cats.
This single red and white
male had odd wiry fur.

American bobtail
According to legend,
bobtails are the result of a
crossbreeding between a
domestic tabby cat and a
bobcat. Yodie, a shorttailed brown tabby male,
mated with a seal point
Siamese colored (cat)
female to create the
Bobtail's original
bloodline.

American curl
The breed originated in
Lakewood, California as
the result of a spontaneous
mutation. In June, 1981,
two stray kittens were
found and taken in by the
Ruga family.

Bicolor Cat
A bicolor cat has white
fur combined with fur of
some other colour, for
example black or tabby.

Bombay
The American breed called
Bombay was created in
1958 in
Louisville, Kentucky, when
Nikki Horner of Shawnee
Cattery deliberately bred an
American Shorthair with a
Burmese for the purpose of
creating a domesticated cat
that resembled a wild
panther (also known as
baby panther).

British semi-long hair
The British Semilonghair cat is a mediumlength-hair version of
the British Shorthair.
Apart from fur, it is
identical to the British
Shorthair. The British
Longhair is also known as
the Lowlander in
the United States and the
Britannica in Europe, but
is not recognized in
the UK as a separate
breed.

Colorpoint Shorthair is
the name the Cat Fanciers
Association (CFA), a
United States breed
association, uses to refer
to pointed cats of
Siamese ancestry and
type in colors other than

It is a breed of domestic
cat. They are a medium
sized breed with slender
legs of a medium length.
The head is round with
well-developed cheeks
and large, open ears.

Laperm
The first LaPerm was
born in 1982 and was a
spontaneous mutation in
an otherwise normal litter
of kittens. Linda and
Richard Koehl owned a
cherry farm in The Dalles,
Oregon, and had obtained
some farm cats to keep
the farm clear of mice.

Dilute Calico
A dilute calico kitty
could be described as a
white cat that decided to
play around in
watercolor paints instead
of in bright oil paints.

Pantherette
is a hybrid breed of cat
that is still under
development. It is
intended to look similar
to a Black panther.

Pixie bob
is a breed of domestic
cat claimed by breed
founder Carol Ann
Brewer of Washington
state to be the progeny of

hybrids.

Peter bald
Peterbalds have an elegantly slim graceful and muscular
build. They have a narrow and long head with a straight
profile, almond-shaped eyes, wedge-shaped
muzzle, and big set-apart ears.

Ragdoll
Ragdolls were first bred in the 1960’s by Ann Baker, a
Persian breeder in California. Some of the original stock
consisted of sturdy, free-roaming cats.

created in 1994. The exact
development of this breed
is cloudy and will likely
remain a mystery

and is of indeterminate
breed.

Somali
The breed appeared
spontaneously in the
1950s from Abyssinian
breeding programs when
a number of Abyssinian
kittens were born with
bottle-brush tails and
long fluffy coats.

Snowshoe
is a rare breed of cat originating in the United
States of America in the 1960s. Snowshoes were
first produced in Philadelphia when
a Siamese breeder's cat gave birth to three
kittens with white feet.

Sokoke
is a more recently
developed natural
breed of felid
hybrid domestic
cats, recognized by two
major cat pedigree registry
organizations as a formal
cat breed.

Tonkinese
Tonkinese cats are a
recent cross between the
Siamese and Burmese cat

assert that Tonkinese-like
cats have existed since at
least the early 1800s, and
the founding cat of the
Burmese breed was

Like all domestic
cats, Turkish Angoras
descended from the
African wildcat (Felis
silvestris lybica). The
mountainous regions of
Eastern Anatolia isolated

The Stone Cougar is a
jungle
cat hybrid developed by
Mandal Exotic Cats to
resemble the
American cougar. In
addition to the cougar-like
color, the body is thick
and low to the ground, the
tail is thick and the ears
are small.

The original Scottish Fold
was a long-haired whitehaired barn cat named
Susie, who was found at a
farm near Coupar Angus
in Perthshire, Scotland in
1961. Susie's ears had an
unusual fold in their

Ocicat
is a new and still-rare
breed of cat which has
spots resembling a 'wild'
cat and the temperament
of a domestic
animal, named for its
resemblance to the ocelot.

Ojos Azules
The first cat discovered
was a tortoiseshell
named Cornflower, who
was found in 1984. She
was bred to males
without the trait which
proved to be dominant as
all her kittens showed it.

Norwegian Forest Cat
The breed is very
old, and occurred as a
natural adaptation to the
cold climate of the
region, but it was not
regarded as anything
other than a standard
house-cat until the late
1930s

Maine Coon
In the 17th and 18th
centuries, domestic cats
brought over from
Europe faced very severe
winters in New England,
where only the strongest
and most adaptable cats
survived.
