5. Social enterprises are more than CSR enterprises
or enterprises with a social aim (1/2)
• Corporate Social Responsibility: “a concept whereby companies
integrate social and environmental concerns in their business
operations and in their interaction with their stakeholders on a
voluntary basis” - COM(2001)366
• Social Enterprises: “the social or societal objective of the
common good is the reason for the commercial activity, often
in the form of a high level of social innovation; (…) profits are
mainly reinvested with a view to achieving this social
objective; and (…) the method of organisation or ownership
system reflects their mission using democratic or participatory
principles or focusing on social justice.” – COM(2011)682 SBI

6. Social enterprises are more than CSR enterprises
or enterprises with a social aim (2/2)
Besides, social enterprises:
- are often coming from collective initiatives (bottom up)
- have strong local roots
- involve local stakeholders and citizens
- are therefore more capable to develop social
innovations for most fair, inclusive, participative and
responsible territories

7. Social enterprises have to highlight their
characteristics:
- objectivizing these characteristics instead of
proclaiming them…
- … with clear indicators…
- … taking into account these characteristics (local
roots and impact on local needs, governance,
social innovation, …)
