The big data hype has been gaining momentum over the past several years. Although a lot of it is hype and buzzwords, what is undeniable is that the use of data to improve decision-making can improve a lot of organizations. Despite this potential, most of the examples we hear about the use of data is in the corporate world, especially in finance, internet search, and advertising. In this talk, I’ll talk about the potential of using data for social good. I’ll give several examples from the Data Science for Social Good Summer Fellowship at the University of Chicago that highlight how data science can be used to solve large-scale problems with social impact in areas such as education, healthcare, sustainability, community development, and disaster relief. I’ll highlight some of the projects related to education and discuss how data scientists have the potential some of these most challenging problems.

The general aim of this work has been to define some guidelines and recommendations for implementation of OCW by institution in a context of student mobility. The approach taken is to determine a set of controls as part of a quality model for the implementation of OCW in virtual mobility. Therefore, this quality model would take into account some acknowledged quality aspects in eLearning, production and reuse of OERs, and at the end, the implementation of mobility programs. The present work is an output of the project ´´Open Course Ware in the European HE context´ European project founded by the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Union. The focus of the project is the creation of preconditions for a strong European OCW framework and as consequence a decline of obstacles to collaboration between European institutes, and therefore an increase in real student mobility.

The Open Education Consortium

In this paper we present the Edoo initiative that aims for increased involvement of teachers in the process of e-learning materials creation. Its main goal is to connect two distinct communities – teachers as users of e-learning materials and programmers as creators of e-learning materials – through the online portal and learning site designed for support and collaboration. The goal of the initiative is to increase cooperation between the two communities, thus overcoming the domain gap between them. The idea of the initiative was well received among teachers, who are missing appropriate learning materials and lack the ability to adapt existing materials to their specific teaching needs. We started the initiative in spring 2013, while the first collaborative projects are being implemented in the winter semester of 2013/2014. The expected result of the initiative is the creation of quality didactic applications that teachers can use in their classes. Besides, we aim at modular and adaptable educational applications with publicly available source code to enable its customization and further development.

The Serious Sports Digital Game is a new, free, online “Coaching Game” The game is designed to help support the learning process of developing good basketball coaching principles in areas such as fitness training, skills training and tactics and strategies through a number of in-game activities and is available for piloting. The Serious Sports project aimed to develop a digital sports game and reusable framework that will offer sports/fitness coaches the opportunity to simulate the physical conditioning, training content and structure in different (training) seasons for a European-wide sparring sport. Furthermore, it provided the VET system with a ‘good practice’ guide that is scalable, applicable and transferable in training courses for initial and continuous professional development and a reusable framework that will be used to populate the digital game with other disciplines thus expanding the scope of the project to benefit a wider variety of trainers.
