Class 2.3 of the PDC+++ ¿What are our real motivations behind each design?   What influence does our world-vision have on this? How do our daily objectives & criteria fit in all this? If our vision is programmed, in great part by the "consumer dream" of our present culture ... How can we really change it? Even though we might have good information & good intention, it's inevitable that we go dragging behind us many habits, patterns & ways of thinking that aren't very permacultural ...

"A perfection of means, & a confusion of aims, seems to be our main problem. "Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character" WHY HOW WHAT Albert Einstein "Imagination is more important than knowledge"
“ You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete." Buckminster Fuller PC: essentially pro-active FIRST ... get very clear about all it's details VISION: big inspiring (magnet) specific clear coherent explicit
Purpose > the Vision Creating a Sustainable Planet (PermaCulture Ethics) Vision of the World-Wide Permaculture Community eg. PAL (Permacultura America Latina) & IPES (Instituto de Permacultura El Salvador)
We believe in: • Cooperating & living in harmony with nature. • Put the restoration of the earth at the heart of all of our activities for the benefit of future generations. • The vitality & skills of the Salvadorian people for transforming their own relity. • The importance of community life for the development of the individual & of society. • The soul of indigenous faith in our given life, the spiritual force in the universe & the fundamental interconnection of all life. Purpose / Vision of the PC Institute in El Salvador
Why not have a sustainable future Why not have a full & enriching life, nice & secure in a supportive environment? Why not have work that makes sense & leaves time for other activities? Why not have a full social life with lots of fun? Why not convert our cities as a group of eco-villages, decent places where to live? Why not grow healthy food? Why not keep gardens, parks & public spaces designed like gardens of Eden? Why not have industrial plants that recycle everything we use in our lives? Why not share with the people around us? Why not? In the end it is up to us. It isn't enough that we beat our chests & cry. What can I do? What we can do is totally clear. First of all we have to put in order our own house. From that point we can extend our influence towards the community through our example, through our society, through our values & transform the Earth in a better place. Do it! Purpose / Vision of the PC America Latina
We only need to ... OFFER a more interesting vision, some more rational OBJECTIVES, & a more doable DESIGN

VISION without Action is a Dream ACTION without Vision is a Nightmare A Vision for your Life creates a framework & clear criteria that guide you
“ all things are created twice” but the first creation often is not CONSCIOUS > make ourselves responsible for our first creations (Visions) otherwise we are- inevitably - the second creations of the visions of other people , of circumstances (control us from the outside) or our habits of the past or patterns (control us from the inside)

VISION - what I want for the Planet (or for the Universe) To my students I say: “ the path is way is clear, the path is open, don't wait for orders! All that you have that belongs to you is your life & your work. Both are valuable gifts for those who are less well-informed. We carry the debt of privilege & it will never be paid back. Move!
MISSION - how I will contribute to this vision with my life Which are my particular Resources: Talents, Passions, Connexions, Knowledge, Training, Experience, etc. VISION - what I want for the Planet (or for the Universe)
for any project Vision or Purpose Mission Objectives Covey Habit 2 start with the end in mind WE CAN DEDUCE ... the Purpose from the Objectives ... conscious or un-conscious WHAT we want to achieve long-term / the objective of the objectives HOW / in what way / my role/s
strategies techniques DESIGN roles times delegate personal CONCRETE weekly/monthly daily Leadership Administration Our lives are VERY different when we know what is truly important for us. With this image in our minds, we move each day to be & do what is truly most important V I S I Ó N Plans /chores M I S I Ó N Metas/ objetivos
Leadership & Administration the two creations producers - cutting the forest administrators - behind, sharpening machetes, writing policy manuals, muscle development programs, etc. .. Leader - the one who climbs up the tallest tree & shouts "wrong forest"! climbing efficiently the ladder of success leadership determines if the ladder is resting on the right wall VISION MISSION
The Movie of our Life The Author & the Director Who wrote the movie that am directing?
The Personal Mission focuses on what you want to BE (character) & DO (contribution & achievements) & the values or PRINCIPLES in which your being & doing are based
The Centre circle of influence self- consciousness imagination independent will ethics In order to write our personal mission, we have to start in the middle of our Circle of Influence - the centre that contains our basic paradigms
security power guide wisdom sense of self-esteem, identity, emotional anchorage - direction in life, - internal reference mark which interprets for you what is happening out there, - standards or principles or implicit criteria which govern the decisions of each moment - your sense of equilibrium, perspective in life - your knowledge of how each part & principle is applied & inter-relate - the capacity to act, - the force & potential for achieving something, - the vital energy for taking decisions & choosing, - the capacity to overcome very stuck habits & cultivate others which are more elevated, more effective The Centre depending on WHAT we put in the centre (of central importance) in our lives our whole compass changes:
security power guide wisdom ............... ........... ................. ............. The Centre depending on WHAT we put in the centre (of central importance) in our lives our whole compass changes:
Many Centres with which do you identify? WHO wrote / is writing the movie am directing?
The Partner Centre security power guide wisdom is based in how your partner treats you - your needs & those of your partner - decisions limited to what would be best for the relationship - your perspective is stuck on the things that may affect the relationship with your partner limited by the weaknesses of your partner & yours
The Family Centre security power guide wisdom Acceptance of the family & performing your role in it A family script is your guide to correct attitudes & behaviours - you interpret life in terms of the family - a partial understanding & family narcissism your actions are limited by family models & traditions
A Money Centre security power guide wisdom your self-esteem depends on your economic 'value' vulnerable to anything that threatens your economic security your criteria for making decisions are based on how much you make / what economic security you will gain the "economic reality" are the glasses through which you see & understand life - creates a distorted judgement restricted to what you can get with your money & your limited vision
A Work Centre security power guide wisdom you define yourself according to your occupational role you only feel comfortable when working you make decisions based on the needs & expectations of your work tendency to be limited by your work role - see your work as your life limited by work models & roles, work opportunities, organizational restrictions, how your boss & colleagues perceive you, your possible incapacity to do your work
A Posessions Centre security power guide wisdom Based on your reputation & social status, or the tangible things you own, tendency to compare what you have with what others have tendency to make decisions based on what will best will protect, increase or show off your posessions you see the world in terms of comparisons of economic & social relations limited by what you can buy or the social status you can acquire
A "Me" Centre security power guide wisdom constantly changing & moving your criteria are: "if it feels good ..." "what I want ... " "what I neeed ..." "what do I get out of this ..." you see the world in terms of how the decisions, events & circumstances affect you your capacity to act is limited by your resources, without the benefit of interdependance
A Pleasure Centre security power guide wisdom you only feel safe / good when you're 'high' on pleasure you make decisions based on what will give you most pleasure you see the world in terms of what it can offer you almost inexitent
A Friends Centre security power guide wisdom Your security is a function of the social mirror very dependent on the opinions of others your criteria for making decisions are: "what will they think?" you are easily embarassed you see the world through "social spectacles" limited by your social 'comfort zone' your actions are as superficial as the opinions
An Enemy Centre security power guide wisdom volatile, based on the movements of your enemies you're always thinking what they are doing searching for validation & self-justification of those who think like you you make decisions based on what will harm your enemy you are contra-dependent of their actions your judgement is narrow & distorted you're defensive, reactive & often paranoid the little power you have comes from your rage, envy, resentment & vendictiveness - a negative energy that diminishes & destroys, leaving little energy for other things
Church-Centred security power guide wisdom based on the activities of your church & the esteem of those who have authority in the church how others will judge you in the context of the doctrines & expectations of the church you see the world in terms of "believers" & "non-believers" your role & position in the church gives you an imaginary power
[object Object],[object Object]
Centred in Principles based on correct principles that don't change, whatever the external conditions fully considers a wide range of consequences longer-term limited only by your observation & understanding of natural laws & correct principles + the natural consequences of those principles guided by a compass that can indicate where you're going & how to get there pareja familia amigos trabajo etc. etc. security power guide wisdom
Principles ,[object Object],[object Object],Correct Principles ARE the territory Values are the maps they are NOT esoteric, mysterious nor religious they can be verified in everyday life - they're self-evident

Class2.3 PDC+++ What are our real motivations behind our designs? Visioning Habit 2 Mind-Movies Mission & Criteria Design Motivation
for a Permaculture Designer Vision or Purpose = a sustainable planet Personal Mission Objectives how I will use my PARTICULAR interests, talents, knowledge, resources, opportunities, contacts, etc. ... to achieve the Purpose my actual projects
your Personal Mission Which ROLES do you take / want to take? What is your CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE? Which are your Talents, Knowledge, Experiences, Contacts, Interests, Passions, ... How would you like to express WHO YOU ARE?
Clear Objectives & CRITERIA Permaculture Principles are very GENERAL CRITERIA for a good design But then there are also local criteria, temporal ones & those very specific to the particular situation that you're designing.
Clear Objectives & CRITERIA Objectives = WHAT we want to achieve Criteria = HOW we want to achieve them, WHAT factors we have to take into account (eg. time, money, resources & available resources, climate, laws, client preferences ... etc.)

PDC+++ Module 2 Class 3 Visioning

  • 37. The Personal Mission focuses on what you want to BE (character) & DO (contribution & achievements) & the values or PRINCIPLES in which your being & doing are based
  • 38. The Centre circle of influence self- consciousness imagination independent will ethics In order to write our personal mission, we have to start in the middle of our Circle of Influence - the centre that contains our basic paradigms
  • 39. security power guide wisdom sense of self-esteem, identity, emotional anchorage - direction in life, - internal reference mark which interprets for you what is happening out there, - standards or principles or implicit criteria which govern the decisions of each moment - your sense of equilibrium, perspective in life - your knowledge of how each part & principle is applied & inter-relate - the capacity to act, - the force & potential for achieving something, - the vital energy for taking decisions & choosing, - the capacity to overcome very stuck habits & cultivate others which are more elevated, more effective The Centre depending on WHAT we put in the centre (of central importance) in our lives our whole compass changes:
  • 40. security power guide wisdom ............... ........... ................. ............. The Centre depending on WHAT we put in the centre (of central importance) in our lives our whole compass changes:
  • 41. Many Centres with which do you identify? WHO wrote / is writing the movie am directing?
  • 42. The Partner Centre security power guide wisdom is based in how your partner treats you - your needs & those of your partner - decisions limited to what would be best for the relationship - your perspective is stuck on the things that may affect the relationship with your partner limited by the weaknesses of your partner & yours
  • 43. The Family Centre security power guide wisdom Acceptance of the family & performing your role in it A family script is your guide to correct attitudes & behaviours - you interpret life in terms of the family - a partial understanding & family narcissism your actions are limited by family models & traditions
  • 45. A Work Centre security power guide wisdom you define yourself according to your occupational role you only feel comfortable when working you make decisions based on the needs & expectations of your work tendency to be limited by your work role - see your work as your life limited by work models & roles, work opportunities, organizational restrictions, how your boss & colleagues perceive you, your possible incapacity to do your work
  • 48. A Pleasure Centre security power guide wisdom you only feel safe / good when you're 'high' on pleasure you make decisions based on what will give you most pleasure you see the world in terms of what it can offer you almost inexitent
  • 51. Church-Centred security power guide wisdom based on the activities of your church & the esteem of those who have authority in the church how others will judge you in the context of the doctrines & expectations of the church you see the world in terms of "believers" & "non-believers" your role & position in the church gives you an imaginary power
  • 52.

  • 59. Clear Objectives & CRITERIA Permaculture Principles are very GENERAL CRITERIA for a good design But then there are also local criteria, temporal ones & those very specific to the particular situation that you're designing.
  • 60. Clear Objectives & CRITERIA Objectives = WHAT we want to achieve Criteria = HOW we want to achieve them, WHAT factors we have to take into account (eg. time, money, resources & available resources, climate, laws, client preferences ... etc.)

Even though we might have good information & good intention, it's inevitable that we go dragging behind us many habits, patterns & ways of thinking that aren't very permacultural ...

Notas do Editor

.. come at the expense of things they later realize were far more valuable to them.
¡Adelante!
