- Welcome! The purpose of this presentation is to help you find ways to obtain mental wellness.
- As most of you know, I am Nina Sullivan, a nurse here at the Sparta Cancer Center and tonight I want to introduce you to methods you can use to promote and achieve mental and physical wellness. I’m also going to show you the benefits to obtaining wellness in these areas. I’m sure there are a few skeptics in the audience so for you I have some research studies that have shown the benefits of mental wellness on the body.
- By achieving mental health fitness we can relieveanxiety, stress, calm the stomach, lower blood pressure, slow heart rate and pulse, and improve the immune system.
- Theodore X. Barber conducted studies in 1984 in which he showed that people can improve healing and affect their physical outcomes by self regulating through the use of hypnosis and mental act ivies. Dr. Peter Schnall conducted a study in 1998 where he studied workers that were exposed to similar stresses. He found that some people seemed to be better able to cope with the stresses in their lives while other were not. He further found that the ones that were not able to cope with the stresses in their lives developed illnesses such as hypertension and heart disease. Dr. Richard Davidson conducted a study in 2003 that looked at work place stresses and how they affect us. In this study one group of employees were given stress reduction and relaxation training and the others were not. The group that were given the stress reduction and relaxation classes achieved a state of less stress and less depression and an elevation of their immune systems.
- We can achieve mental wellness by meditation, by performing Yoga, Tia Chi, Qigong, Martial Arts, by listening to Guided Imagery CDs and by learning relaxation techniques.
- I’d like you to just sit comfortably, relax, close your eyes and take some slow deep breaths in and out, try to do these deep breaths to the count of 10. Continues deep breathing just like that while I play a meditation CD from Kaplan University regarding Loving Kindness. This will give you an idea of just how relaxing meditation can be.
- That CD was almost as relaxing as gazing at the ocean and hearing the pounding serf, wasn’t it? There are a variety of Guided Imagery CDs that you can find that also can achieve that calm peaceful sensation.
- Now I’d like to show you aninteresting video from the Wall Street Journal. In this video seniors are achieving physical and mental wellness along with confidence. They are also receiving the added benefit of being able to defend themselves if ever needed.
- In conclusion Research has shown that Mental Fitness benefits us by relieving anxiety, stress, calmingthe stomach, lowering blood pressure, slowing heart rate andpulse, and building up the immunesystem. Try to incorporate mental fitness activities in your daily life. Taking even fifteen to thirty minutes a day for yourself and doing relation techniques will make a huge difference in your life.
