The document discusses using a questionnaire to identify the target audience for a 2-minute film introduction in the social realism genre. The questionnaire asked about viewing habits, tastes, knowledge of the genre, and if they enjoyed socially realistic or anti-social youth films. Most respondents were young males aged 16-23 from a middle class background who enjoyed these types of films but did not fully understand social realism. After showing the introduction, feedback found it dragged and seemed like a first scene, not an introduction. Revisions based on this helped attract the target demographic.

Finding the target audience for a social realism film
1. Criteria four: Who would be the audience for your media product CRITERIA FIVE: HOW DID YOU ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE
2. Finding My Audience My two minute introduction is of the social realism genre, which was a relatively unknown category to me at the time. This combined with the themes in my introduction left me unable to fully determine my demographic. To solve this problem, I printed off a questionnaire, and handed it out to people
3. My questionnaire My questionnaire was separated into four sections, these being: biographical information, viewing habits, tastes and preferences and the audience’s knowledge of the genre. The point of the questionnaire was to get to know my audience and the type of people my film would appeal to. Furthermore, from the questionnaire I was also able to find out what would attract my audience to my film
4. Indentifying The Audience Two of my questions were “have you ever seen a social realism film (please state which one if answered yes)” and “did you enjoy the film you saw”. The majority answered yes to both, however I discovered that almost all the films listed in the results were either a hybrid genre (i.e. The Full Monty, comedy/social realism), or a film portraying young people (i.e. Kidulthood, negatively portrays youths).
5. This linked into my next question which asked whether the audience likes films portraying anti-social youths (which is a large theme in my two minute introduction). The majority answered “yes” or “sometimes” showing that the people answering the questionnaires would enjoy my film. By comparing this to the biographical part of the questionnaire I was able to identify my target audience as young males (16-23) from a middle class background.
6. Addressing My Audience Despite finding my demographic, one of my other questions asked what the audience understood about social realism in the film genre. Most participants were unable to answer this question, meaning most did not fully understand what social realism actually is
7. This meant that after I made my 2 minute introduction, it would be best to address my demographic directly, rather than give them another questionnaire, as they would be unsure which elements were social realism and which ones were not. This enabled me to acquire their criticisms on how to improve the film, and make it more desirable to my target audience.
8. From the criticisms received I discovered that my film had many unnecessary shots that only dragged out the introduction. I also found that the extract seemed more like a first scene, rather than an introduction. After applying the changes, I went on to show my demographic the extract again, and the majority liked it, and said they would watch on.
