Storyline Enterprise orgs don’t want to build and run data centers – they will be brokers of services that span on- and off-premises resources. Cloud first. Manage data, not data centers. In the past, CIOs have viewed their IT organizations as a builder of services for the business. But with the explosion of new web services to reach customers, incredible growth in mobile devices, new technologies like flash, the new paradigm of cloud computing, CIOs are dealing with more complexity than ever, and this is driving them to rethink their role. Today, CIOs are moving from being builders of apps and operators of data centers to becoming brokers of information services to the business. They're embracing new technologies and new service models that allow them to make IT faster, cheaper, and smarter and make their companies more responsive and more competitiveMoving to the cloud:Customers want lower cost and faster provisioning with scale.Ideally, customers don’t want to manage data center – cloud first if possible.Mandate to move to cloud (we hear the “AWS mandate” all the time). While they need these things, they do not want to (cannot) give up control.
Storyline The attraction for public cloud infinite/flexible/inexpensive COMPUTE is too great to ignore - it’s moths to the flame. They WILL move to public cloud/hyperscalar, but won’t give it all away. They will need the blend across private & public to be seamless.Moving to the cloud means adopting multiple cloud resources that span private (enterprise DC) and public (value-add, commercial cloud service providers + hyperscalar). But customers don’t want a collection of discrete resources – they want the ability to manage the entire environment from a single purview. This necessitates seamless connections between cloud resources and the need for a cloud data fabric.Storyline Because of the blend of resources, they will need to manage the dynamic nature of the environment. The arrows work both ways (not just toward public cloud). So it’s about CONTROL & FLEXIBILITY. Thehyperscalar approach might be perceived as a long-term panacea, but reality is the masses will be consuming IT from all 3 resources for the foreseeable future. The ability to dynamically manage cloud resources will be critical.
Storyline For the service broker, managing across hybrid is not easy. Talk about inhibitors/needs (below). Ultimately it’s about the need to retain control.Hybrid Data Center INHIBITORS“I know I need a hybrid approach – span multiple clouds – but how do I do it?” “Where do I begin?”Inconsistent data containers and inefficient transportNo ability to address data governanceHybrid Data Center NEEDSOperational efficiency – ease of use (that would come from a common data platform)Security & Compliance to facilitate proper data governancePartner ecosystem for choice without compromiseChallenge ultimately comes down to While enterprise orgs are embracing a hybrid datacenter model that spans private and public cloud resources, they still need to maintain control of data governance, access, performance, availability, protection and security while maintaining OR IMPROVING operational efficiency.

The IT sector is on a Journey. As customers continue to adopt virtualization technology, we have seen a fundamental shift in how they are able to build, run and deliver IT services to their business partners and how they have been able to directly advance their business goals. The Journey is more than a path of adopting increasing amounts of technology. It is a shift in the role that virtualization plays – from a catalyst for consolidating hardware infrastructure, to an efficiently managed and automated environment, to a platform for agile IT service delivery and consumption. The Journey provides an overarching view for how customers evolve from rigid and inflexible legacy architectures to modern and agile infrastructures.
Extending virtualization is what the software-defined data center is all about. It starts with compute, the very foundation for the software-defined data center. We will continue to extend virtualization through all applications. Second, storage. We need to transform storage and align it uniquely with the demands of applications. Third, network. We intend to virtualize the network for speed and efficiency, just like we did for the server. And finally, we will automate data center and cloud management.
But applications need data—and data needs to be stored somewhere. And that’s the next leg of our software-defined data center journey. Storage is complex and hard to get right, but it’s mission-critical. You lose a packet, you retry it, your server goes down, your HA get restarted—but storage you’ve got to get right.
Storage is an industry effort and we’ve had a long history of working with the ecosystem. We’re going to continue to work deeply with the ecosystem as we drive this software-defined storage vision, extending it to working closely with the server suppliers as they embrace and enable VSAN in their platforms. We are also continuing to work with our storage partners in areas like Virtual Volumes, and finally with the entire industry as we work to enable this virtualization of data services. We encourage all of you in the storage industry to look at and enable a new class of data services for the future. Software-defined storage is a key leg of the overall software-defined data center vision.
vCloud Suite provides the essential building blocks for building and operating an SDDC.The highlighted boxes show the products included in the vCloud suite and we recommend the suite as the first step for all enterprise customers on their SDDC journey. For SMB and commercial customers the recommended first step is: vSphere with Operations Management or vSOM
So what is the hybrid cloud? For us, it’s any app, any place, no compromise. With that common management, the same management tools you use on-premise, you can manage workloads off-premise. The same networking, the IP addresses never change, the network policies don’t change, the security mechanisms don’t change. Common support mechanisms. It is a seamless extension of your on-premise data center to the public cloud. We believe this is what you need for your businesses, your customers, your internal users. And as line of business and DevOps are exploring public cloud, this is a way for you to satisfy those needs without compromising SLAs, governance, regulatory requirements—delivering VMware software both public and private, and tying them together. We have just announced the general availability of VMware vCloud Hybrid Service— now generally available to all of our customers and partners, the first and only true Hybrid Cloud Service.VMware is uniquely positioned to become a genuine global leader in providing public cloud services thanks to the combination of VMware’s technology stack, our credibility and our position with many of our clients who trust us deeply, and thirdly, our very rich ecosystem, which is exactly what you need to help bring something like this to market.
Our roadmap is very much based on the feedback and guidance our clients have given us. The first service we expect to launch later on in the fourth quarter is a service that’s going to be of great appeal to clients already using our Site Recovery Manager products—we are calling this a Disaster Recovery as-a-Service offering and it’s a very logical extension if you are existing user of our capabilities to now see vCloud Hybrid Services a destination for disaster recovery. The second is Cloud Foundry. Many of our clients are using it as an environment for developing both existing and next-gen applications and we will be extending that up into vCloud Hybrid Services as well. We expect general availability in the fourth quarter. And finally Desktop as-a-Service, making our View and Horizon products available as a SaaS-based offering on vCloud Hybrid Service that seamlessly integrates with any desktop services you have on-premise and will extend into the vCloud Hybrid Service off-premise as well.
