MEET A 2015 GRAD -
NAKUL SATYENDRA
By Alexa Nagy
A passion for public health brought a dental
student across the world
2. Nakul
Satyendra
is a foreign
trained
dentist
from India
who
desired to
learn about
health issues, demographics, beliefs and attitudes of
the United States’ population.
Satyendra studied dentistry in India and came to the
United States to pursue a Masters in Public Health in
Occupational and Environmental Health Track at the
WVU School of Public Health, of which he graduates
this May. His graduate education has enlightened him
about “matters that would be of concern with health
and safety in a clinical scenario.”
Through the MPH program, he learned of an
internship opportunity to do just that. Working with
Bobbi Sykes, Director of Practice-based Learning in
the School of Public Health, and Barbara MacLennan,
geography graduate teaching assistant at WVU and
certified Solid Waste Association of North America
recycling systems professional, he immersed himself
in an essential position.
Satyendra became a full time intern with the Marion
County Solid Waste Authority Project ALERT
(Assistance in Lowering Environmental Rural Toxins)
during the fall semester, and fulfilled 360 required
3. hours for his practice based experience. He explained
that the purpose of the project is to issue a hazardous
waste disposal handbook and medication disposal
kits, as well as, work with stakeholders who obtain
materials that would otherwise end up in landfills,
streams, etc.
Satyendra chose this internship because he could
share his field of knowledge, including Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
recommendations, to assist in the planning and set-up
of a recycling facility. Being given a role in developing
the proper disposal handbook, in where items of daily
use were listed to help residents of Marion County
find a correct method of storage, recycling or
disposal, enticed him to accept the internship.
Satyendra had several responsibilities at his
internship. He updated the handbook, participated in
collection events, distributed handbooks and
medication disposal kits, reviewed literature of how
certain substances can make their way into streams
and bodies of water, developed a protocol for
employees’ safety at the recycling facility and
contacted stakeholders to inquire about residents’
concerns.
4. Satyendra speaks of the positives of the company.
The Marion County Solid Waste Authority is a non-
profit organization that strives to keep its county
clean, expand its network and become familiar with
other active watershed groups. Marion County won
the “Clean County Award,” of which Satyendra aided
in creating a document. The award shined a light on
the organization and its members who worked
diligently to make a significant difference. Also, a
board of members oversees the company to track its
progress and growth.
“I am yet to discern any negatives,” said Satyendra.
“Considering the fact that this organization's funds are
limited, they do a remarkable job and having reached
this level is definitely worth the praise.”
He has enjoyed many classes in his master’s program.
He has learned an abundance of new information and
relates to various topics, such as policy making,
epidemiology, the statistics in health, OSHA, work
place safety, and so on. He understands the basics in
research design and implementing a study.
“Overall I would say this program would help me
implement a community approach while dealing with
patient population when I practice dentistry in the
future,” said Satyendra.
He aspires to provide the best possible care at the
individual level by applying the knowledge he has
gained through his graduate education at the WVU
School of Public Health.
