A carcass of advance pregnant buffalo was presented to the Department of Veterinary Pathology, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Parbhani, (M.S.) for conduct of post mortem examination with the history of anorexia, generalized subcutaneous emphysema and respiratory distress.

1. Unusual Esophageal obstruction in a buffalo - Necropsy

A carcass of advance pregnant buffalo was presented to the
Department of Veterinary Pathology, College of Veterinary and Animal
Sciences, Parbhani, (M.S.) for conduct of post mortem examination with the
history of anorexia, generalized subcutaneous emphysema and respiratory
distress.
On post mortem examination a leathery layered mass with
presence of ruminal content impacted within layers as depicted in photographs
(Plate 1.) was found to be located just at the beginning of esophagus. The
foreign mass appeared to be mixed with the ruminal content and might have
come in to existence during the act of regurgitation as evidenced by findings
noted. The localized earlier congestive & necrotic changes in involved
esophageal mucosa, however, the walls of esophagus remain intact with out any
pathological changes.
Considering the history and gross lesions noted the buffalo might
have died due to asphyxia as a consequence of respiratory distress caused due to
esophageal obstruction.
