6. Standard 2.1.a: Membership & Operations
Advisory board recruitment efforts result in at least 10 members, who together represent all
aspects of the academy’s industry theme including businesses, higher education, parents,
students, academy directors and school/district administration.
Directions:
1. Review your assigned NAF standard with your group.
2. Read the scenario and discuss the questions.
3. Come up with a solution using a consensus approach.
4. Be prepared to share your standard, scenario and solution with the group.
Scenario: Your academy has reported to NAF that there is a cadre of volunteers to serve on a
career-themed NAF advisory board. Prior to the opening of the new school year, your academy
leader notifies the date, place, and time for your very first advisory board meeting. At the first
advisory board meeting, six school-site educators and one industry partner attend.
Questions:
What procedures need to be put in place to ensure this dilemma does not reoccur?
What support or training could help the academy leader be prepared for this challenge?
Who might the academy leader inform of the challenge in order to find a resolution?

7. Standard 2.2.a: Support for Learning
The advisory board assists academy staff with curriculum selection, design, and
implementation, as well as provides technical assistance and professional development
Standard 2.2.b: Support for Learning
The advisory board brings its industry knowledge and expertise to the students through
classroom team teaching, guest speaking, and mentoring. In addition, the advisory board
provides structured, work-based learning experiences and assists with project work.
Directions:
1. Review your assigned NAF standard(s) with your group.
2. Read the scenario and discuss the questions.
3. Come up with a solution using a consensus approach.
4. Be prepared to share your standard, scenario and solution with the group.
Scenario: You’ve had your first couple advisory board meetings, with ten or more industry
partners in attendance. You have overviewed the NAF model, advisory boards, and your work-
based learning plan. At the last board meeting, your industry partners said very little, and after
the meeting one of your partners mentioned that he was unsure of how he could best support
your academy.
Questions:
How will you ensure that your industry partners engage with your curriculum and
provide work-based learning opportunities for your students?
How will you increase the level of participation from your industry partners at board
meetings?
