2. Bernice and Gracie decided to celebrate their
engagement together rather than have separate
hen parties. It was also the perfect time for
Gracie to meet all of Bernice’s friends.
3. Gracie had become
something of a workaholic
when she moved to
Appaloosa, so had no
friends of her own to invite.
Instead, all the women of
Deasil Street made her feel
welcome.
They danced into the wee small hours, and enjoyed the fancy
booze Bernice had got on discount from her job at a bar.
4. A few days later everyone from the street that they knew turned up to their sunset
wedding at the beach. The children and teens couldn’t come as it would run on until
after curfew, which suited Gracie. She was a bit unsure around children.
6. Night had all but fallen by the
time they actually exchanged
rings, and the stars stood
witness to their vows.
7. They cut the cake and sent their guests on their way.
They hadn’t been able to afford a reception party as
well as their hen night celebration.
8. But the lack of a lengthy party suited
them. It meant they could go home and
enjoy being married straight away.
9. Ambrose’s boyfriend Frank had finally returned
from his long business trip. She was over the
moon to see him, especially given her very
pregnant condition.
Frank however took one look at her baby-
bump and screwed up his face in disgust.
10. He stayed calm long enough to ask if the baby was his.
But when Ambrose nodded shyly, upset at his cold
demeanour he flew into a rage.
11. He told her straight out he
had never been looking for
a long term
relationship, and trying to
trap him into one by
getting pregnant was the
end of them as a couple.
What did she think she
was playing at? How dare
she decide to carry the
baby to term without
consulting him…
He conveniently forgot he
had given her no way of
contacting him for the
months he had been away.
12. He had never loved her and now they were over, their only contact would now be via
his lawyer. He would be ending his contract with her a musician as well. He expected a
paternity test to be conducted after the birth, if she refused she wouldn’t see a penny
from him.
Ambrose was too shocked to cry or shout or defend herself. He stalked off without
being contested.
13. She was still standing outside when
Bernice came home from work.
Soon the whole story was out, and
Bernice vowed Ambrose wouldn’t
have this baby alone. Frank would
pay up alright, but have nothing to
do with the baby even if he
changed his mind after the birth.
She and Gracie would be with her
every step of the way.
