âI the conch,â said Piggy indignantly. âYou let me speak!â
âThe Conch doesnât count on top of the mountain,â said Jack, â so you shut up.â
Piggyâs indignation at Jackâs lack of respect for the âconchâ, a symbol of
social order and democracy and associated with Ralphâs leadership,
shows the differences between the characters as the two sides
become established.

Ralphâs power is fragile and Jack does not respect the established
social order.
âI the conch,â said Piggy indignantly. âYou let me speak!â
âThe Conch doesnât count on top of the mountain,â said Jack, â so you shut up.â
Piggyâs indignation at Jackâs lack of respect for the âconchâ, a symbol of
social order and democracy and associated with Ralphâs leadership,
shows the differences between the characters as the two sides
become established. The exclamation heightens Piggyâs indignation
at Jackâs lack of respect for the fragile democracy. Jackâs
monosyllabic response leads the reader to feel terror for Piggy and
their island civilisation. This perhaps shows Goldingâs message that
man is capable of evil.

26. For example

âI the conch,â said Piggy indignantly. âYou let me speak!â
âThe Conch doesnât count on top of the mountain,â said Jack, â so you shut up.â
Piggyâs indignation at Jackâs lack of respect for the âconchâ, a symbol of
social order and democracy, shows the differences between the
characters as the two sides become established. Jack is dismissive
of both Piggy and the rules and this is emphasised wit his
monosyllabic retort; his statement that the conch does not work up
the mountain foreshadows how the power struggle will lead to a
physical and ideological separation between the boys. Piggyâs
repetition of âIâve got the conchâ in this scene show how
committed he is to social order. Piggy later dies with the conch as
the power struggle has destroyed the social order âinto a thousand
white fragments (as it) cease(s) to exist.â This links to the theme
