Executive Summary
UnitedHealthcare is pleased to nominate Sue Schick, Chief
Executive Officer of UnitedHealthcare, Pennsylvania and
Delaware, for Modern Healthcare’s Community Leadership
Award. Sue‟s dedication to numerous local and national
nonprofits and her continued commitment to bettering the
Philadelphia and greater Pennsylvania community in which
she lives and works makes her an ideal nominee for this
important award.
Sue is a business leader, philanthropist and role model. She believes that the role of a true
leader is to help one‟s team members live up to their full potential. In her ten years with
UnitedHealthcare, Sue has embodied the company‟s mission of helping people to live
healthier lives both inside and outside of the office.
As CEO of UnitedHealthcare Pennsylvania and Delaware, Sue is responsible for leading
a team that serves members across all insurance segments – from commercial health
plans to Medicaid and Medicare. As a corporate leader, Sue interacts with customers and
members of all ages and backgrounds. Similarly, her philanthropic commitments run the
gamut – from helping women fight breast cancer to advocating for the health of newborn
babies to supporting children with type 1 diabetes. However, all of Sue‟s volunteer
commitments have one common thread: to improve the health of individuals, families
and communities.

Commitment to Philadelphia and the Greater Pennsylvania Community
Since moving to Philadelphia when she became CEO three years ago, Sue has immersed
herself in community organizations that help to better the health and opportunities for the
city‟s residents and the greater Pennsylvania community. She holds significant leadership
roles on a range of organizations both independently and through her work with
UnitedHealthcare. Sue plays a critical role in motivating her employees to volunteer and
ensures that the company makes use of its vast resources to support the community.
Outside of the office, Sue is actively engaged with the Philadelphia affiliate of Susan G.
Komen for the Cure, Pennsylvania March of Dimes, JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Commission for Women, Forum for Executive Women, and
the Governor‟s Advisory Council on Privatization and Innovation.
In 2011, Sue received the “Circle of Excellence Award” from SmartCEO Magazine,
which honors Philadelphia business leaders for their philanthropic efforts. She also
received a “Brava! Business Women Achievement Award,” which recognizes women
business leaders in Philadelphia for their community involvement.

Commitment to Helping People Live Healthier Lives
Sue has worked in the employee benefits industry for more than 25 years. She has had a
front row seat to the changes in the health care industry, from rising health care costs to
the aging U.S. population. Sue says that these changes require a “whole new brand of
leadership, innovative thinking and collaboration.” As CEO of UnitedHealthcare,
Pennsylvania and Delaware, Sue is navigating the business towards a more consumer-
focused and personalized approach to care. Outside of the office, she continues this goal
by volunteering her time, energy and expertise to organizations that are directly involved
in providing research and support to help improve the lives of families affected by breast
cancer, premature birth or birth defects and type 1 diabetes.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Within a single week, Sue received two separate phone calls from friends telling her that
they had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Both women were mothers with young
families. Sue saw firsthand how the research, leadership and support services provided by
Susan G. Komen for the Cure were instrumental in helping both of her friends to beat
breast cancer. When Sue arrived in Philadelphia more than three years ago, she
immediately joined to the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G.
Komen for the Cure so she could help the foundation that helped those close to her.
Kids for the Cure: UnitedHealthcare Dash to Make a Difference
Since joining the Board of Directors, Sue has been
actively engaged in the chapter‟s fundraising events.
Last year, she was instrumental in bringing the Susan
G. Komen Kids for the Cure: UnitedHealthcare Dash
to Make a Difference to the Philadelphia community.
After volunteering for a number of years at the Race
for the Cure (5 km) and watching families come out to
support their moms, sisters, teachers, aunts and
friends affected by breast cancer, Sue realized that
young children wanted to get involved and needed an
outlet that would allow them to participate and
contribute in their own way.
“I was thinking about my two friends whose families had both been through so much.
And I kept seeing that their kids wanted be involved,” said Sue. “They wanted to feel like
they were able to make a difference and to help fight the disease that had directly
impacted their lives.”

Sue secured UnitedHealthcare‟s sponsorship of the event, and more than 300 kids
participated in the 2012 inaugural Dash to Make a Difference. This year, the Dash was
held on Mother‟s Day and again hundreds of children participated.

Team Ra-Ras Kicks Breast Cancer
In October 2010, 136 current and former NFL cheerleaders, including eight breast cancer
survivors, came together in Philadelphia to make a viral YouTube video to raise money
for breast cancer. Sue Schick enlisted the corporate support of UnitedHealthcare of
Pennsylvania and Delaware to sponsor production of the video and to donate 10 cents to
the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate each time the performance was viewed on YouTube, up
to a total of $100,000 or one million views. Within just three weeks, the video reached its
initial goal, serving as a personal health reminder for more than one million viewers
around the globe.
To further support the video‟s success,
UnitedHealthcare has increased their pledge to
donate an additional $50,000 when the video
reaches five million and eight million views,
respectively.

Asian-American Women’s Breast Health Awareness Event
Historically, Asian women have among the lowest incidences of breast cancer. However,
doctors are seeing more and more cases of breast cancer among both Asian women
abroad and Asian-American women. Because of the historically low risk, Asian women
are often less informed about breast health and breast cancer prevention. In addition,
breast cancer tends to affect Asian women at far younger ages and in more aggressive
forms than their non-Asian counterparts. For the past nine years, the Susan G. Komen for
the Cure Philadelphia Affiliate has hosted an event geared toward the high-risk Asian-
American population, inviting clinicians to educate women in their native languages
about breast health and screening. Five hundred to eight hundred women attend the
annual event in Philadelphia.

Sue has been working with the foundation to find ways to make this critical health
information available to a broader population. For the past six months, she has been
actively consulting on a project to determine how best to get the word out to Asian-
American women across the country. The group is currently exploring options to
distribute brief video clips from this event to be screened in doctor‟s office waiting rooms
nationwide, to provide information about breast health and screening in a variety of
languages and better engage these hard-to-reach populations. They hope to make the
videos available in 2014.
March of Dimes
Ever since her son was born with a birth defect more than 20 years ago, Sue has made it
her mission to help expecting mothers have healthy, full-term pregnancies, as well as to
support research into complications that can threaten the health of babies. She has served
on the Board of Directors for the Pennsylvania chapter of the March of Dimes for three
years. Sue also serves on the Executive Council, which actively recruits other executives
to become involved with March of Dimes.
JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes Philadelphia
The JDRF (formerly Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation) is the largest
nongovernmental funder of type 1 diabetes
research. The JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes,
which occurs throughout the country, raises
money for research to cure, treat and prevent
type 1 diabetes.
UnitedHealthcare of Pennsylvania and
Delaware has supported JDRF in numerous
ways since 2009. Sue twice served as the Corporate Walk to Cure Diabetes Chair. In this
role, one of her main responsibilities is to recruit corporations to provide financial
support for the walk. In 2013, JDRF recognized Sue‟s dedication by naming her an
honoree at the organization‟s annual fundraising gala, the Promise Ball. As a tribute to
Sue, ten local children with type 1 diabetes created a sculpture at East Fall Glassworks,
which was then auctioned off at the event.

Leveraging Business Experience to Empower Others
Sue has been recognized as a business leader in the Philadelphia community by multiple
organizations. She is committed to helping people of all ages enter and succeed in the
business world, particularly women. Her dedication as a mentor extends to college
students as well as her UnitedHealthcare colleagues.
Governor’s Advisory Council on Privatization and Innovation
In 2011, Sue was appointed as a member to Pennsylvania Governor Corbett‟s Advisory
Council on Privatization and Innovation. The Council explores ways to make the state
government more efficient. The panel evaluates privatization, public-private partnerships
and managed-competition opportunities as ways to save tax-payer dollars. Sue brings
more than 25 years of business experience to the Council.
Pennsylvania Commission for Women
Sue currently serves as Chairperson to the
Pennsylvania Commission for Women. The
Commission is dedicated to informing,
educating, advocating and providing
opportunities to empower Pennsylvania
women and girls to reach their highest
potential. This includes promoting job
training and upward mobility for women, including the operation and support of small
businesses owned and operated by women. Sue worked to create a statewide leadership
award for women who inspire other women, named after Hannah Penn, the first lady of
Pennsylvania.
The Forum of Executive Women
The Forum of Executive Women is a membership organization of 350 women of
significant influence across the Greater Philadelphia region. In 2011, Sue was named to
the Philadelphia Business Journal Women of Distinction List along with seven other
members of the Forum.
Dedicated Mentor to Students and Colleagues
Throughout her career, Sue has been a committed mentor both inside and outside of the
office. She is currently on the Board of Trustees at her alma mater, Randolph-Macon
College in Ashland, Virginia. As a trustee, she chairs the Student Affairs Committee and

actively seeks to help students prepare to enter the workforce. She previously served as
the president of the Society of Alumni.
Sue also has served as a mentor during her 10-year career with UnitedHealthcare. In
addition to engaging in one-on-one mentoring, she has mentored two classes of
“Emerging Leaders,” a program that helps mid-level team members to expand their roles
at the company.

Sue extends her can-do attitude beyond her personal philanthropic endeavors and
motivates her colleagues to give back.
‘Paying It Forward’
Sue has always embraced the idea of „paying it forward‟ in her own life, saying “I have a
great appreciation for all I have received in my life and I feel like I have to give back and
find ways to help others.” She had often daydreamed about giving each of her
UnitedHealthcare team members a small sum of money to pay it forward in a way that
serves the community.
Last year, Sue had that chance when a check she received as compensation for a bumped
business flight totaled the rough equivalent of $20 dollars for each of her team members.
At the UnitedHealthcare Pennsylvania and Delaware annual picnic, Sue gave each
employee $20 with the stipulation that they would pay it forward without any expectation
of something in return. Some team members pooled together to sponsor a colleague
whose house had burned down. Others gave their money to help the homeless. Each
employee had the opportunity to post their story on the company‟s internal blog and
document how the experience of paying it forward had changed their own lives for the
better.
Promoting Volunteerism
Sue is committed to helping employees at UnitedHealthcare of Pennsylvania and
Delaware to better the communities in which they live and work by facilitating volunteer
opportunities with local organizations. The office‟s employee engagement team selects
volunteer events to support. Each event has a team leader who then recruits colleagues to
participate in the event. Sue sends out a weekly newsletter with a list of events, as well as
placing banners and signs around the office.
For the past two years, Sue has initiated a weekday volunteer event for all of the
employees of the Philadelphia and Delaware offices to volunteer together. She has also
added a volunteer element to the annual employee picnic, which now kicks off each year
with a morning spent helping out at a local food pantry.
Last year, Sue‟s team logged hundreds of volunteer hours. UnitedHealthcare of
Pennsylvania and Delaware has contributed nearly $300,000 to charitable organizations
under her leadership.
Sue is a true inspiration to her community and colleagues as evidenced by her
unwavering commitment and dedication to numerous organizations that seek to help
communities and improve the lives of others.

Sue Schick is Chief Executive Officer of UnitedHealthcare, Pennsylvania and Delaware. In her
role, she is responsible for all aspects of overseeing the company‟s Medicaid and commercial
health benefits business in the Commonwealth, including growing and retaining members,
establishing market and network strategies, achieving financial targets, acting as a primary
interface with key stakeholders.
Sue joined UnitedHealthcare in 2003 as the National Vice President of Broker Strategies &
Programs before being named CEO of the Pennsylvania and Delaware. She has been in the
employee benefits industry for more than 25 years, including 10 years as an Employee Benefits
Practice & Middle Market Leader with Marsh (formerly Johnson & Higgins).
Sue is a regular speaker and blogger on the topics of health care reform, business leadership and
philanthropy. She is the chairperson of The Pennsylvania Commission for and is actively
engaged in the local community as she strives to help increase opportunities for women and
improve the health of the communities in which she and her staff live and work. Sue also serves
on the Governor's Advisory Council on Privatization and Innovation whose goal is to explore
how functions performed by state government might be better and more cost-effectively
performed by the private sector. Sue is on the Membership Committee of the Forum of Executive
Women and on the Board of the Insurance Federation of Pennsylvania. In addition, Sue is a

Women Achievement Award,” which recognizes women business leaders in Philadelphia for
their business achievement and community involvement. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Philadelphia Affiliate also recognized Sue in 2011 with the Lumina Award for her efforts and the
company‟s commitment to help find a cure for breast cancer. In 2013, JDRF named Sue Schick
and UnitedHealthcare honorees for its annual fundraising gala, the Promise Ball, for Sue‟s
dedication to the nonprofit through her years of service as the corporate chair for the JDRF‟s
annual Walk to Cure Diabetes.
Sue holds a B.S. in economics/business from Randolph-Macon College, where she graduated
summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She is currently on the Randolph-Macon
Board of Trustees and is an active volunteer, including serving as past president of the Society of
Alumni. She received her Certified Employee Benefits Designation from the International
Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans and the Wharton School, and was the founding President
of the Richmond ISCEBS Chapter.
