1.       GENERAL INFORMATION

        1.1.    Graduate programs available
The School of Veterinary Medicine offers the Master of Science degree (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy
(Ph.D.) degrees in Veterinary Medical Sciences. Under this umbrella, the Department of Veterinary
Clinical Sciences offers both the Master of Science (MS) degree and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
degrees.

        1.2.    Philosophy and objectives
Advanced training in veterinary clinical sciences at the MS or PhD level is designed to prepare students
for advancement in academia and the private sector. The primary objective of study in this department is
to practice and investigate clinical veterinary medicine for the understanding of etiology, pathogenesis,
diagnosis, therapy and control of diseases and conditions. The advanced studies program of this
department is designed to train individuals to function as independent scientists. The faculty of this
department have competency in a wide range of clinical disciplines including surgery, internal medicine,
oncology, radiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, theriogenology and anesthesiology. Close alliance of
this department with other departments in the School of Veterinary Medicine provides latitude in the
design of study programs to include Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Microbiology and Parasitology,
Veterinary Pathology, Epidemiology and Community Health and Veterinary Physiology, Pharmacology
and Toxicology.

        1.3.    Qualifications, minimum requirements and application procedures
Acceptance of graduate students is the decision of the graduate faculty of the Department of Veterinary
Clinical Sciences (VCS) and applicants are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Academic qualifications of
the applicant and the availability of funds, assignable facilities, and faculty are considered.

To qualify academically, an applicant must have
1. A Bachelor’s or D.V.M. degree from a recognized university
2. GPA of at least 3.00 based on a 4.00 grading system or equivalent
3. Combined verbal and quantitative GRE score of at least 1000 (this may vary at the discretion of the
    Departmental Graduate Faculty committee). GRE scores must be from within 5 years of application
    for admission. Any exceptions to this time frame are made at the request of the department and by
    approval of the Dean of the Grad School.
4. TOEFL score of at least 550 (written), 213 (computer-based) or 79 (IBT) if English is not a first
    language and show satisfactory verbal communication skills

Students with a GPA less than 3.00 or a GRE score less than 1000 may be considered and admitted on
probation if so recommended by the graduate faculty of the department. Students admitted on probation
will remain on probation until the completion of 9 hours of graduate level, graded courses with at least a
3.00 average. Students on probation may not hold assistantships or fellowships. This does not apply to
graduate students in a concurrent advanced clinical training program.

2.       THE GRADUATE PROGRAM
        2.1.    Application
Prospective graduate students should contact the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences prior to
applying the Louisiana State University graduate school through their on-line process. Prospective

graduate students that are also in an advanced clinical training program will be contacted re their
application to the Graduate School in late March to early April so they can submit their application prior
to starting their program in July.
                2.1.1. Application package
Application information is available online or can be requested from the department or the Graduate
school. The following items must be submitted to The Graduate School, Louisiana State University, 114
David Boyd Hall, Baton Rouge, LA 70803 in order to be officially enrolled in Graduate School.

The following items need to be submitted to the Graduate School:
1. Completed application for Admissions (use #2 pencil only & DO NOT FOLD)
2. Application fee ($25 nonrefundable check or money order made out to LSU)
3. Any late fee ($25 late fee for applications postmarked after May 1 for intersession; May 15 for Fall
   semester, October 15 for Spring semester and May 15 for summer term)
4. Official transcripts from all previous college work
3. Official scores on the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) General Test (not more than 5 years old,
   see 1.3 above)
4. Official scores on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) if international applicant from
   a country other than the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Belize or certain
   Caribbean Islands

        2.2.    Registration
Graduate students must schedule classes themselves using REGGIE, a telephone registration system. The
approximate deadline dates for registration for each semester are as follows: Fall semester - March 29 -
July 12; Spring semester - November 1 - December 1; Summer semester - March 29 - April 23. If
students do not register by the deadline date, they will be assessed a late service charge of $75.00. The
student is responsible for this late fee of $75.00 and not the Department. Participants in an advanced
clinical training program qualify for tuition fee exemption. As the effective dates of clinical programs are
July 1 each year, it is imperative that Graduate Students meet with the VCS Graduate Advisor, their
mentor, and service chief to determine courses to be offered for the fall semester and to register for them
within the first two weeks of the start of the advanced clinical training program.

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences course offerings are listed each semester in the LSU
Schedule of Classes booklet and are distributed and posted within the Department to each graduate
student.
                2.2.1. Non-matriculating students
Participants in an advanced clinical training program that are not required to do a MS degree may enroll
as non-degree students and be classified, upon request of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences,
as non-matriculating. However, please be advised that only twelve hours taken as a non-matriculating
student may be applied toward a degree should you wish to later enter a degree program. There is a
simple two-page application to complete, letter of approval from the Department, and a $25.00
application fee. See also Error! Reference source not found. for information about auditing classes.

                2.2.2. Auditing classes
Any person in the department or external to the department who wishes to participate in any of the classes
must audit the class officially by enrolling through the Graduate School. No credit is given for classes
audited. Alternatively, the person can enroll as a non-matriculating student (NMATR) and gain credit for
completing the class. As directed by the LSU Graduate School, written consent of the individual
instructor and the Dean of the Graduate School are required for auditing classes. Enrollment forms for

auditing classes and registration forms for NMATR students are available through the VCS Departmental
Office or the LSU Graduate School (See 2.2.1). Fees for auditing courses are in accordance with the
“Regular Semester”. Students in an advanced clinical training programs registering as a NMATR may be
entitled to a fee waiver.


        2.3.    Major professor
                2.3.1. Selection of major professor
Each student will have a major professor who directs the student’s Graduate Committee. The major
professor may be assigned to or elected by the graduate student, depending on the area of research. The
major professor must be a member (associate or full) of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences
Graduate Faculty. A faculty member who holds adjunct status with the Department of Veterinary Clinical
Sciences and who has associate or full membership of the Graduate Faculty can act as a co-major
professor.
                2.3.2. Role of major professor
The major professor is responsible for guiding the graduate student through the graduate program on a
daily basis.

The major professor evaluates the graduate student’s research, chairs the student’s graduate examinations
and acts as a liaison between the Student’s Graduate Committee, the Departmental Graduate Faculty
Committee and the LSU Graduate School. The major professor, in conjunction with the graduate student
and the Student’s Graduate Committee, are responsible for constructing the course work program for the
student and identifying possible deficiencies. This program of study must be constructed and approved
by the Departmental Graduate Faculty by the end of the first year. The major professor will report
(written) the student’s progress to the Departmental Graduate Advisor and the Departmental Graduate
Faculty Committee at the end of each year (see 2.5, 2.6, Error! Reference source not found.).

        2.4.    Graduate Committee
                2.4.1. Structure of Student’s Graduate Committee
The Student’s Graduate Committee must consist of a minimum of three faculty members, including the
major professor who acts as chair of the committee. All members of the graduate committee must be on
the graduate faculty. One member must be a full member of the graduate faculty in VCS. Other members
may be drawn from the major department or other departments. The graduate committee must be
approved by the Departmental Graduate Faculty and the Dean of the Graduate School. The Student’s
Graduate Committee should be composed of those faculty members best qualified to direct and evaluate
the student’s program of study and research. Responsibility for selection of the committee lies with the
student in consultation with their graduate advisor.
                2.4.2. Role of Student’s Graduate Committee
The Graduate Committee is responsible for initially reviewing the course work program for the student
and accepting this program (with revisions) before review by the Departmental Graduate Faculty
Committee. The graduate committee is also responsible for deciding the format of the thesis. The
graduate committee is responsible for final acceptance of the master’s thesis.

        2.5.    Departmental Graduate Faculty
The elected chair of the Departmental Graduate Faculty serves as the Departmental Graduate Advisor,
chair of the Departmental Graduate Faculty Committee, and may be a member of the School of

Veterinary Medicine Graduate Academic Studies Council. Duties of the Departmental Graduate Faculty
include reviewing graduate programs, developing graduate courses, and reviewing graduate applications.

The Departmental Graduate Faculty Committee consists of at least one member of any section that has a
graduate student and one member from a section that does not. The committee does not exclude any
member of the graduate faculty who wishes to participate in meetings or activities of the committee. The
committee will meet on a bimonthly basis or as needed and will act as a liaison between the Student’s
Graduate Committee and the Departmental Graduate Faculty.

        2.6.    Departmental Graduate Advisor
The chair of the Departmental Graduate Faculty also acts as the Departmental Graduate Advisor. The
chair maintains liaison between the graduate student and the Departmental Graduate Faculty, using the
Departmental Graduate Faculty Committee to assist in reviewing individual graduate programs, graduate
student progress or providing advice to the Graduate Committee and major professors.

        2.7.    Academic Program
Study plans for students pursuing the MS degree are flexible and designed to provide the student with a
broad background. Specialization at the MS level can be achieved through a study plan that is developed
with the advice of a major professor and the Student’s Graduate Committee. Study plans must include
advanced courses in Veterinary Clinical Sciences. Study plans can also include advanced courses in
statistics, experimental design, microscopic and macroscopic anatomy, pathology and physiology.
Students pursuing the MS degree are expected to attend and participate in departmental seminars
whenever these are offered.
                2.7.1. Program of study
A proposed program of study signed by the advisor and the graduate student must be submitted to the
Departmental Graduate Faculty Committee by the end of the first year of enrollment. The graduate
school does not require formal notification of the program of study. The program of study proposal
should include the student’s program objectives, course schedule, teaching responsibilities, if any, and
their clinical responsibilities, if any.
                2.7.2. Transfer of credits

        2.8.    Academic Standards
                2.8.1. Grades for the graduate school
°   Grades carrying advanced degree credit
         ° A,B,C (up to but not more than 6cr of grade C), S (satisfactory), P (pass)
°   Grades carrying no credit
         ° D, F, I (incomplete), W (withdrawn), U (unsatisfactory), NC (no credit)
°   The I grade indicates that a course performance was satisfactory, but because of circumstances
    beyond the student’s control, all requirements have not been met. An I grade should not be given to
    enable the student to do additional work to bring up a deficient grade. An I grade may not be given
    for a course undertaken in the semester in which the student graduates if the course is listed in the
    application for the degree or if changing the I to an F would result in the student’s cumulative average
    being less than 3.00. An I grade can never be assigned for thesis research. S and U grades are given
    for thesis (8000) research courses up to and including the semester the student graduates.
    Authorization from the Dean of the Graduate School is NOT required for assignment of an I grade.
    An I grade is valid only until the final date for submission of grades at the end of the next regular

semester (fall or spring), whether or not the student is enrolled. Responsibility for changing an I
    grade lies with the student and the faculty member concerned. Failure by the faculty member in
    submitting a “Grade Correction Report” to change an I grade by the final date for submission of
    grades will result in the I grade becoming a permanent F grade.
                2.8.2. Grades requirement
Graduate students are considered in good standing if they earn a 3.00 cumulative average on all graduate
course work taken within the LSU system and if they earn a grade of S in research.

A student who has a cumulative average below 3.0 in either graduate course work or total course work
will be placed on probation. A student with a cumulative average as low as 2.75 may be dropped from
the graduate school. A student receiving a U for research will also be placed on probation. A student
receiving a second U may be dropped from the graduate school. The student must attain a cumulative
average of 3.00 the following semester to continue in the program.


        2.9.    Research program
All research proposals should be presented to a group of faculty and other graduate students in the area of
interest for suggestions or recommendations.

Early submission of the research proposal by the graduate student to the Student’s Graduate Committee
and Departmental Graduate Faculty Committee is required to ensure that questions regarding the
suitability of the program, procedures to be used or time required for completion are not raised late in the
student’s program. The research proposal should be approved by the Student’s Graduate Committee and
the Departmental Graduate Committee before any investment of time or work has begun.
                2.9.1.    Animal use
All projects, whether clinical or experimental, whether using live or dead vertebrates must be submitted to
the Louisiana State University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) for approval
before they begin. See 2.9.1.1 for guidelines. This process can take 1 to 2 months. The Departmental
representatives can provide guidance on submitting this form. The appropriate form should be submitted
(available on disc from the Department office). The graduate student CAN NOT be listed as the principal
investigator on the IACUC form. This should be the major professor, the graduate student being listed as
the co-investigator or co-principal investigator.

Graduate students must attain certification by the IACUC for handling the animal species involved in the
research program. Training material required for certification is available in the library. For other details,
contact the Chairperson of the IACUC committee or the Veterinary Clinical Sciences representatives.
                         2.9.1.1.Animal use guidelines
Following are guidelines to assist investigators in determining whether an approved animal care and use
form is necessary prior to data collection. Examples given are not intended to be all inclusive.
An approved animal care and use form is not needed when:
1. A doctor-client relationship exists and procedures performed on, or samples collected from animals
    are limited in type and quantity to those consistent with the accepted diagnostic, preventative or
    therapeutic practice of veterinary medicine. Examples of such include those performed or collected
    in the routine activities of veterinary clinicians.
2. Tissues, including blood, are obtained from animals - a) in the normal course of clinical management,
    b) the normal course of activities at the Animal Control Center, or c) by another investigator. In each
    case, the secondary need for tissues must not influence their primary management. Examples of these
    include left over blood collected for diagnostic purposes, unneeded tissue collecting following

euthanasia of clinical patients or research animals, and scientific use of archival biopsy or necropsy
   specimens.
3. Clinical or other biological observations are made on animals involved in commercial enterprises, so
   long as the observations do not influence their primary management. Examples of such include
   clinical observation of animals in training for athletic events, and morphologic measurement of fish
   harvested by commercial fisherman.
An approved animal care and use form is needed when:
1. Procedures performed on, or samples collected from animals are primarily for research data
   acquisition, even if they are compatible with accepted veterinary practice.
                2.9.2. Research funding
Extramural funding for conducting research is encouraged and is the responsibility of the graduate student
with the advice of the Student’s Graduate Committee. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the major
professor, with the cooperation of the graduate student, to obtain funding for the research. Many
extramural sources are available depending on the area of interest and species involved.

Limited intramural funding may be available through the department or individual sections. These are
unreliable sources, and when available, are usually on a non-renewable, yearly basis.

If funding is not secured when entering the program, the graduate student and major professor are advised
to seek funds from extramural sources within the first year.
                        2.9.2.1. Internal funding grant submission protocol
This protocol is covered in VMED 7004 Introduction to Research which should be taken the first
semester of the student’s curriculum.
                        2.9.2.2. External funding grant submission protocol

        2.10.   Department Resources
Department facilities, faculty training and collaboration with other departments in the School of
Veterinary Medicine and other LSU departments allow study plans with topics in many facets of clinical
sciences. There is a working relationship with the Pennington Biomedical Research Center and the
Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station.
                2.10.1. Media services
A well equipped biomedical communications facility is available to all faculty and graduate students.
Computer generated slides, illustrations, photographic services and video services are available. For a
full listing of capabilities see the website for the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine Media Services.
The Media Services office is located on the second floor of the School of Veterinary Medicine Building
in Room 2216 (phone 89-930).
                2.10.2. Office support
Computer support is available for graduate student use. Photocopying, typing and other manual tasks can
be performed by Departmental office staff and work study students, depending on availability of staff and
time constraints.
                2.10.3. Assistantships
A limited number of assistantships may be available for graduate students who are not also enrolled in an
advanced clinical training program. These will be awarded on a competitive basis. Usually, graduate
students holding the DVM or equivalent degree will be engaged in an advanced clinical training program

and will be funded through these programs. State supported stipends are awarded only to post-DVM
students not in an advanced clinical training program. Other stipends are available from the Alumni
Foundation, the Board of Regents and from grants and contracts.

4.       MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE PROGRAM
         4.1.   Course and Credit Hour Requirements
All master’s graduate students must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours of graduate courses, a final
examination and a thesis.
Course requirements
° A minimum of 12 hours of graduate work must be at the 7000 level or greater.
° A minimum of 10 hours of course credit must be from VCS courses
° A minimum of 6 hours of research/thesis credit must be completed (only 6 hours counted towards
    degree)
° A maximum of 4 hours of seminar (VCS 7001) may be applied toward the MS degree
° A maximum 8 hours of special topics (VCS 7003) may be applied toward the MS degree
° A minimum of 8 hours of non-VCS courses

         4.2.   Course load
For students enrolled in a MS program, a minimum of 9 credits hours per semester and 6 credit hours in
the summer are required to constitute full-time study.

For students also completing an Advanced Clinical Study Program, a MAXIMUM of 8 credit hours can
be taken per semester and a MAXIMUM of 6 credit hours in the summer.

        4.4.     Thesis
A research thesis is required for all degree candidates.
                 4.4.1. Thesis Preparation and Requirements
The master’s thesis should demonstrate capacity for research, originality of thought, and ability in
organizing materials. It must be acceptable in subject matter and exhibit creditable literary workmanship.

The format of the thesis is decided by the Student’s Graduate committee. At least 6 semester hours of
thesis credit are required for the MS degree. For information concerning thesis preparation, consult the
pamphlet “Guidelines for the Preparation of Theses and Dissertations”, available from the LSU Graduate
School.

        4.5.     Final Examination and Thesis Defense
Candidates for the MS degree are required to pass a comprehensive final examination. This examination
may be oral, written or both, depending on the preference of the Student’s Graduate Committee.
Graduate students must be registered for a minimum of one to three hours of credit during any semester in
which they are taking the MS final examination.

Typically, the final examination is an oral examination following the thesis defense. The thesis defense
takes the form of a seminar, open to attendance by any interested parties. Following the seminar, the
graduate student and the examination committee will convene and discuss the thesis, asking questions of
the graduate student. Minor changes to be made to the thesis can be requested by the examination
committee at this point.

At least 3 weeks prior to the time of this examination, the student should submit to the Graduate School a
request for appointment of the examining committee. Normally, a candidate for the MS degree will take
the final examination during the semester in which he or she plans to graduate. If a student wishes to take
the final examination earlier, the student’s graduate committee must provide the Dean of the Graduate
School with a sound academic reason for doing so. Examinations may not be scheduled between
semesters.

The final examination committee is usually composed of those faculty members who serve as the
Student’s Graduate Committee. At least one member of the examination committee must be a full
member of the Graduate Faculty. The major professor serves as the chair of the examining committee.
The committee is nominated by the chair of the student’s major department and appointed by the Dean of
the Graduate School.

In order for the student to pass this examination, there may be no more than one dissenting vote.
(Dissenting votes, along with assenting votes, must be recorded on the examination cards and the thesis
approval sheets submitted to the Graduate School).

        4.6.    Publications
Each student will be required to submit at least one manuscript based on their research to a refereed
journal.

        4.7.    Duration of Course of Study
Full time MS degree students should complete the degree in two calendar years. Ideally, the graduate
student doing a concurrent residency program should complete the MS degree prior to or during the last
semester of the residency. This may be a requirement in some residencies. All students must complete the
MS degree within five calendar years.


5.      DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAM

        5.1.    Course and Credit Hour Requirements

Course requirements: The Graduate School has no specific course work requirements for the Ph.D.
degree. However, sufficient course work, equivalent to at least three years full-time study at the course
level of 4000 or above, is expected. The course work, in conjunction with research training, will provide
the student with the skills needed for continuing research independent of the major professor. The VCS
course work requirements are as follows:

Requirements

     at least 14 credits of VCS courses
     at least two statistic courses (minimum of 6 credits)
     at least 3 credits of VCS 7001 (max of 4) (Seminar)
     at least 3 credits VCS 7210 (max of 4) (Journal Review)
     a maximum of 6 hours VCS 7003 (Special topics)
     VMED 7004 (2 credits) (Intro to research)
     a minimum of 12 hours research (VMED 8900, 9000) with a maximum of 24 hours

If a minor is selected, the course work must meet the minor requirements of that department.


14 credits      VCS Graduate Courses 7000 or above (e.g. 4@VCS 7210, 4@VCS7001, 6@VCS7003)
 2 credits      VMED 7004
 8 credits      Statistics courses (2 courses – credits range 6-8)
12 credits      Elective courses
24 credits      Research (VMED 8900/9000)

        5.2.    Course load

For students enrolled in a PhD program, a minimum of 9 credits hours per semester and 6 credit hours in
the summer are required to constitute full-time study.

For students also completing an Advanced Clinical Study Program, a MAXIMUM of 8 credit hours can
be taken per semester and a MAXIMUM of 6 credit hours in the summer.


        5.3.    Graduate Course Listing
In addition to courses listed under the Master of Science program above,

        5.4.    General Exam
It is in the best interests of students that those with high probability of continuing successfully toward a
doctoral degree be identified as soon as possible. Doctoral students are, therefore, required to pass a
rigorous qualifying examination or the general examination within three calendar years (36 months)—or a
period deemed equivalent for part time students—of their classification as doctoral students. Exception
may be made to this if a department so petitions the Graduate School.

        5.5.    Dissertation
Students who have passed the general examination normally direct most of their energies toward
preparation of the dissertation, which must be a contribution to knowledge in the major field of study. The
dissertation must demonstrate a mastery of research techniques, ability to do original and independent
research, and skill in formulating conclusions that in some way enlarge upon or modify accepted ideas.
The form of the dissertation must be in accordance with the instructions in the electronic thesis and
dissertation guidelines available online at etd.lsu.edu.

        5.6.    Final Exam and Dissertation Defense
A request for the final examination must be submitted to the Graduate School by the student’s department
chair at least three weeks prior to the proposed examination date and by the current semester deadline, if
the student is a candidate for a degree (see the academic calendar for all pertinent dates). This request
must specify the major and minor fields (if appropriate), dissertation title, time and place proposed for the
examination, and nominations for the examining committee. The examining committee, including the
dean’s representative, must have copies of the dissertation at least two weeks prior to the final
examination. Examinations may not be scheduled between semesters.

        5.7.    Publications

Each student will be required to submit at least one manuscript based on their research to a refereed
journal.

        5.8.    Time Limit
The program for the doctoral degree must be completed within seven years from the time a student is
classified as a doctoral student. This time limit may not be exceeded except by special permission of the

dean of the Graduate School. No less than one academic year may elapse between the passing of the
general examination and the completion of all requirements for the doctoral degree.

  • 4. 1. GENERAL INFORMATION 1.1. Graduate programs available The School of Veterinary Medicine offers the Master of Science degree (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Veterinary Medical Sciences. Under this umbrella, the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences offers both the Master of Science (MS) degree and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. 1.2. Philosophy and objectives Advanced training in veterinary clinical sciences at the MS or PhD level is designed to prepare students for advancement in academia and the private sector. The primary objective of study in this department is to practice and investigate clinical veterinary medicine for the understanding of etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, therapy and control of diseases and conditions. The advanced studies program of this department is designed to train individuals to function as independent scientists. The faculty of this department have competency in a wide range of clinical disciplines including surgery, internal medicine, oncology, radiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, theriogenology and anesthesiology. Close alliance of this department with other departments in the School of Veterinary Medicine provides latitude in the design of study programs to include Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Microbiology and Parasitology, Veterinary Pathology, Epidemiology and Community Health and Veterinary Physiology, Pharmacology and Toxicology. 1.3. Qualifications, minimum requirements and application procedures Acceptance of graduate students is the decision of the graduate faculty of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) and applicants are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Academic qualifications of the applicant and the availability of funds, assignable facilities, and faculty are considered. To qualify academically, an applicant must have 1. A Bachelor’s or D.V.M. degree from a recognized university 2. GPA of at least 3.00 based on a 4.00 grading system or equivalent 3. Combined verbal and quantitative GRE score of at least 1000 (this may vary at the discretion of the Departmental Graduate Faculty committee). GRE scores must be from within 5 years of application for admission. Any exceptions to this time frame are made at the request of the department and by approval of the Dean of the Grad School. 4. TOEFL score of at least 550 (written), 213 (computer-based) or 79 (IBT) if English is not a first language and show satisfactory verbal communication skills Students with a GPA less than 3.00 or a GRE score less than 1000 may be considered and admitted on probation if so recommended by the graduate faculty of the department. Students admitted on probation will remain on probation until the completion of 9 hours of graduate level, graded courses with at least a 3.00 average. Students on probation may not hold assistantships or fellowships. This does not apply to graduate students in a concurrent advanced clinical training program. 2. THE GRADUATE PROGRAM 2.1. Application Prospective graduate students should contact the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences prior to applying the Louisiana State University graduate school through their on-line process. Prospective -4-
  • 5. graduate students that are also in an advanced clinical training program will be contacted re their application to the Graduate School in late March to early April so they can submit their application prior to starting their program in July. 2.1.1. Application package Application information is available online or can be requested from the department or the Graduate school. The following items must be submitted to The Graduate School, Louisiana State University, 114 David Boyd Hall, Baton Rouge, LA 70803 in order to be officially enrolled in Graduate School. The following items need to be submitted to the Graduate School: 1. Completed application for Admissions (use #2 pencil only & DO NOT FOLD) 2. Application fee ($25 nonrefundable check or money order made out to LSU) 3. Any late fee ($25 late fee for applications postmarked after May 1 for intersession; May 15 for Fall semester, October 15 for Spring semester and May 15 for summer term) 4. Official transcripts from all previous college work 3. Official scores on the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) General Test (not more than 5 years old, see 1.3 above) 4. Official scores on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) if international applicant from a country other than the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Belize or certain Caribbean Islands 2.2. Registration Graduate students must schedule classes themselves using REGGIE, a telephone registration system. The approximate deadline dates for registration for each semester are as follows: Fall semester - March 29 - July 12; Spring semester - November 1 - December 1; Summer semester - March 29 - April 23. If students do not register by the deadline date, they will be assessed a late service charge of $75.00. The student is responsible for this late fee of $75.00 and not the Department. Participants in an advanced clinical training program qualify for tuition fee exemption. As the effective dates of clinical programs are July 1 each year, it is imperative that Graduate Students meet with the VCS Graduate Advisor, their mentor, and service chief to determine courses to be offered for the fall semester and to register for them within the first two weeks of the start of the advanced clinical training program. The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences course offerings are listed each semester in the LSU Schedule of Classes booklet and are distributed and posted within the Department to each graduate student. 2.2.1. Non-matriculating students Participants in an advanced clinical training program that are not required to do a MS degree may enroll as non-degree students and be classified, upon request of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, as non-matriculating. However, please be advised that only twelve hours taken as a non-matriculating student may be applied toward a degree should you wish to later enter a degree program. There is a simple two-page application to complete, letter of approval from the Department, and a $25.00 application fee. See also Error! Reference source not found. for information about auditing classes. 2.2.2. Auditing classes Any person in the department or external to the department who wishes to participate in any of the classes must audit the class officially by enrolling through the Graduate School. No credit is given for classes audited. Alternatively, the person can enroll as a non-matriculating student (NMATR) and gain credit for completing the class. As directed by the LSU Graduate School, written consent of the individual instructor and the Dean of the Graduate School are required for auditing classes. Enrollment forms for -5-
  • 6. auditing classes and registration forms for NMATR students are available through the VCS Departmental Office or the LSU Graduate School (See 2.2.1). Fees for auditing courses are in accordance with the “Regular Semester”. Students in an advanced clinical training programs registering as a NMATR may be entitled to a fee waiver. 2.3. Major professor 2.3.1. Selection of major professor Each student will have a major professor who directs the student’s Graduate Committee. The major professor may be assigned to or elected by the graduate student, depending on the area of research. The major professor must be a member (associate or full) of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences Graduate Faculty. A faculty member who holds adjunct status with the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and who has associate or full membership of the Graduate Faculty can act as a co-major professor. 2.3.2. Role of major professor The major professor is responsible for guiding the graduate student through the graduate program on a daily basis. The major professor evaluates the graduate student’s research, chairs the student’s graduate examinations and acts as a liaison between the Student’s Graduate Committee, the Departmental Graduate Faculty Committee and the LSU Graduate School. The major professor, in conjunction with the graduate student and the Student’s Graduate Committee, are responsible for constructing the course work program for the student and identifying possible deficiencies. This program of study must be constructed and approved by the Departmental Graduate Faculty by the end of the first year. The major professor will report (written) the student’s progress to the Departmental Graduate Advisor and the Departmental Graduate Faculty Committee at the end of each year (see 2.5, 2.6, Error! Reference source not found.). 2.4. Graduate Committee 2.4.1. Structure of Student’s Graduate Committee The Student’s Graduate Committee must consist of a minimum of three faculty members, including the major professor who acts as chair of the committee. All members of the graduate committee must be on the graduate faculty. One member must be a full member of the graduate faculty in VCS. Other members may be drawn from the major department or other departments. The graduate committee must be approved by the Departmental Graduate Faculty and the Dean of the Graduate School. The Student’s Graduate Committee should be composed of those faculty members best qualified to direct and evaluate the student’s program of study and research. Responsibility for selection of the committee lies with the student in consultation with their graduate advisor. 2.4.2. Role of Student’s Graduate Committee The Graduate Committee is responsible for initially reviewing the course work program for the student and accepting this program (with revisions) before review by the Departmental Graduate Faculty Committee. The graduate committee is also responsible for deciding the format of the thesis. The graduate committee is responsible for final acceptance of the master’s thesis. 2.5. Departmental Graduate Faculty The elected chair of the Departmental Graduate Faculty serves as the Departmental Graduate Advisor, chair of the Departmental Graduate Faculty Committee, and may be a member of the School of -6-
  • 7. Veterinary Medicine Graduate Academic Studies Council. Duties of the Departmental Graduate Faculty include reviewing graduate programs, developing graduate courses, and reviewing graduate applications. The Departmental Graduate Faculty Committee consists of at least one member of any section that has a graduate student and one member from a section that does not. The committee does not exclude any member of the graduate faculty who wishes to participate in meetings or activities of the committee. The committee will meet on a bimonthly basis or as needed and will act as a liaison between the Student’s Graduate Committee and the Departmental Graduate Faculty. 2.6. Departmental Graduate Advisor The chair of the Departmental Graduate Faculty also acts as the Departmental Graduate Advisor. The chair maintains liaison between the graduate student and the Departmental Graduate Faculty, using the Departmental Graduate Faculty Committee to assist in reviewing individual graduate programs, graduate student progress or providing advice to the Graduate Committee and major professors. 2.7. Academic Program Study plans for students pursuing the MS degree are flexible and designed to provide the student with a broad background. Specialization at the MS level can be achieved through a study plan that is developed with the advice of a major professor and the Student’s Graduate Committee. Study plans must include advanced courses in Veterinary Clinical Sciences. Study plans can also include advanced courses in statistics, experimental design, microscopic and macroscopic anatomy, pathology and physiology. Students pursuing the MS degree are expected to attend and participate in departmental seminars whenever these are offered. 2.7.1. Program of study A proposed program of study signed by the advisor and the graduate student must be submitted to the Departmental Graduate Faculty Committee by the end of the first year of enrollment. The graduate school does not require formal notification of the program of study. The program of study proposal should include the student’s program objectives, course schedule, teaching responsibilities, if any, and their clinical responsibilities, if any. 2.7.2. Transfer of credits See General Catalog 2.8. Academic Standards 2.8.1. Grades for the graduate school ° Grades carrying advanced degree credit ° A,B,C (up to but not more than 6cr of grade C), S (satisfactory), P (pass) ° Grades carrying no credit ° D, F, I (incomplete), W (withdrawn), U (unsatisfactory), NC (no credit) ° The I grade indicates that a course performance was satisfactory, but because of circumstances beyond the student’s control, all requirements have not been met. An I grade should not be given to enable the student to do additional work to bring up a deficient grade. An I grade may not be given for a course undertaken in the semester in which the student graduates if the course is listed in the application for the degree or if changing the I to an F would result in the student’s cumulative average being less than 3.00. An I grade can never be assigned for thesis research. S and U grades are given for thesis (8000) research courses up to and including the semester the student graduates. Authorization from the Dean of the Graduate School is NOT required for assignment of an I grade. An I grade is valid only until the final date for submission of grades at the end of the next regular -7-
  • 8. semester (fall or spring), whether or not the student is enrolled. Responsibility for changing an I grade lies with the student and the faculty member concerned. Failure by the faculty member in submitting a “Grade Correction Report” to change an I grade by the final date for submission of grades will result in the I grade becoming a permanent F grade. 2.8.2. Grades requirement Graduate students are considered in good standing if they earn a 3.00 cumulative average on all graduate course work taken within the LSU system and if they earn a grade of S in research. A student who has a cumulative average below 3.0 in either graduate course work or total course work will be placed on probation. A student with a cumulative average as low as 2.75 may be dropped from the graduate school. A student receiving a U for research will also be placed on probation. A student receiving a second U may be dropped from the graduate school. The student must attain a cumulative average of 3.00 the following semester to continue in the program. 2.9. Research program All research proposals should be presented to a group of faculty and other graduate students in the area of interest for suggestions or recommendations. Early submission of the research proposal by the graduate student to the Student’s Graduate Committee and Departmental Graduate Faculty Committee is required to ensure that questions regarding the suitability of the program, procedures to be used or time required for completion are not raised late in the student’s program. The research proposal should be approved by the Student’s Graduate Committee and the Departmental Graduate Committee before any investment of time or work has begun. 2.9.1. Animal use All projects, whether clinical or experimental, whether using live or dead vertebrates must be submitted to the Louisiana State University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) for approval before they begin. See 2.9.1.1 for guidelines. This process can take 1 to 2 months. The Departmental representatives can provide guidance on submitting this form. The appropriate form should be submitted (available on disc from the Department office). The graduate student CAN NOT be listed as the principal investigator on the IACUC form. This should be the major professor, the graduate student being listed as the co-investigator or co-principal investigator. Graduate students must attain certification by the IACUC for handling the animal species involved in the research program. Training material required for certification is available in the library. For other details, contact the Chairperson of the IACUC committee or the Veterinary Clinical Sciences representatives. 2.9.1.1.Animal use guidelines Following are guidelines to assist investigators in determining whether an approved animal care and use form is necessary prior to data collection. Examples given are not intended to be all inclusive. An approved animal care and use form is not needed when: 1. A doctor-client relationship exists and procedures performed on, or samples collected from animals are limited in type and quantity to those consistent with the accepted diagnostic, preventative or therapeutic practice of veterinary medicine. Examples of such include those performed or collected in the routine activities of veterinary clinicians. 2. Tissues, including blood, are obtained from animals - a) in the normal course of clinical management, b) the normal course of activities at the Animal Control Center, or c) by another investigator. In each case, the secondary need for tissues must not influence their primary management. Examples of these include left over blood collected for diagnostic purposes, unneeded tissue collecting following -8-
  • 9. euthanasia of clinical patients or research animals, and scientific use of archival biopsy or necropsy specimens. 3. Clinical or other biological observations are made on animals involved in commercial enterprises, so long as the observations do not influence their primary management. Examples of such include clinical observation of animals in training for athletic events, and morphologic measurement of fish harvested by commercial fisherman. An approved animal care and use form is needed when: 1. Procedures performed on, or samples collected from animals are primarily for research data acquisition, even if they are compatible with accepted veterinary practice. 2.9.2. Research funding Extramural funding for conducting research is encouraged and is the responsibility of the graduate student with the advice of the Student’s Graduate Committee. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the major professor, with the cooperation of the graduate student, to obtain funding for the research. Many extramural sources are available depending on the area of interest and species involved. Limited intramural funding may be available through the department or individual sections. These are unreliable sources, and when available, are usually on a non-renewable, yearly basis. If funding is not secured when entering the program, the graduate student and major professor are advised to seek funds from extramural sources within the first year. 2.9.2.1. Department Resources Department facilities, faculty training and collaboration with other departments in the School of Veterinary Medicine and other LSU departments allow study plans with topics in many facets of clinical sciences. There is a working relationship with the Pennington Biomedical Research Center and the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station. 2.10.1. Media services A well equipped biomedical communications facility is available to all faculty and graduate students. Computer generated slides, illustrations, photographic services and video services are available. The Media Services office is located on the second floor of the School of Veterinary Medicine Building in Room 2216 (phone 89-930). 2.10.2. Office support Computer support is available for graduate student use. Photocopying, typing and other manual tasks can be performed by Departmental office staff and work study students, depending on availability of staff and time constraints. 2.10.3. Assistantships A limited number of assistantships may be available for graduate students who are not also enrolled in an advanced clinical training program. These will be awarded on a competitive basis. Usually, graduate students holding the DVM or equivalent degree will be engaged in an advanced clinical training program -9-
  • 10. and will be funded through these programs. State supported stipends are awarded only to post-DVM students not in an advanced clinical training program. Thesis Preparation and Requirements The master’s thesis should demonstrate capacity for research, originality of thought, and ability in organizing materials. It must be acceptable in subject matter and exhibit creditable literary workmanship. The format of the thesis is decided by the Student’s Graduate committee. At least 6 semester hours of thesis credit are required for the MS degree. For information concerning thesis preparation, consult the pamphlet “Guidelines for the Preparation of Theses and Dissertations”, available from the LSU Graduate School. 4.5. Final Examination and Thesis Defense Candidates for the MS degree are required to pass a comprehensive final examination. This examination may be oral, written or both, depending on the preference of the Student’s Graduate Committee. Graduate students must be registered for a minimum of one to three hours of credit during any semester in which they are taking the MS final examination. Typically, the final examination is an oral examination following the thesis defense. The thesis defense takes the form of a seminar, open to attendance by any interested parties. Following the seminar, the graduate student and the examination committee will convene and discuss the thesis, asking questions of the graduate student. Minor changes to be made to the thesis can be requested by the examination committee at this point. At least 3 weeks prior to the time of this examination, the student should submit to the Graduate School a request for appointment of the examining committee. Normally, a candidate for the MS degree will take the final examination during the semester in which he or she plans to graduate. If a student wishes to take the final examination earlier, the student’s graduate committee must provide the Dean of the Graduate School with a sound academic reason for doing so. Examinations may not be scheduled between semesters. -13-
  • 14. The final examination committee is usually composed of those faculty members who serve as the Student’s Graduate Committee. At least one member of the examination committee must be a full member of the Graduate Faculty. The major professor serves as the chair of the examining committee. The committee is nominated by the chair of the student’s major department and appointed by the Dean of the Graduate School. In order for the student to pass this examination, there may be no more than one dissenting vote. (Dissenting votes, along with assenting votes, must be recorded on the examination cards and the thesis approval sheets submitted to the Graduate School). 4.6. Publications Each student will be required to submit at least one manuscript based on their research to a refereed journal. 4.7. Duration of Course of Study Full time MS degree students should complete the degree in two calendar years. Ideally, the graduate student doing a concurrent residency program should complete the MS degree prior to or during the last semester of the residency. This may be a requirement in some residencies. All students must complete the MS degree within five calendar years. 5. DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAM 5.1. Course and Credit Hour Requirements Course requirements: The Graduate School has no specific course work requirements for the Ph.D. degree. However, sufficient course work, equivalent to at least three years full-time study at the course level of 4000 or above, is expected. The course work, in conjunction with research training, will provide the student with the skills needed for continuing research independent of the major professor. Graduate Course Listing In addition to courses listed under the Master of Science program above, 5.4. General Exam It is in the best interests of students that those with high probability of continuing successfully toward a doctoral degree be identified as soon as possible. Doctoral students are, therefore, required to pass a rigorous qualifying examination or the general examination within three calendar years (36 months)—or a period deemed equivalent for part time students—of their classification as doctoral students. Exception may be made to this if a department so petitions the Graduate School. 5.5. Dissertation Students who have passed the general examination normally direct most of their energies toward preparation of the dissertation, which must be a contribution to knowledge in the major field of study. The dissertation must demonstrate a mastery of research techniques, ability to do original and independent research, and skill in formulating conclusions that in some way enlarge upon or modify accepted ideas. The form of the dissertation must be in accordance with the instructions in the electronic thesis and dissertation guidelines available online at etd.lsu.edu. 5.6. Final Exam and Dissertation Defense A request for the final examination must be submitted to the Graduate School by the student’s department chair at least three weeks prior to the proposed examination date and by the current semester deadline, if the student is a candidate for a degree (see the academic calendar for all pertinent dates). This request must specify the major and minor fields (if appropriate), dissertation title, time and place proposed for the examination, and nominations for the examining committee. The examining committee, including the dean’s representative, must have copies of the dissertation at least two weeks prior to the final examination. Examinations may not be scheduled between semesters. 5.7. Publications Each student will be required to submit at least one manuscript based on their research to a refereed journal. 5.8. Time Limit The program for the doctoral degree must be completed within seven years from the time a student is classified as a doctoral student. This time limit may not be exceeded except by special permission of the -15-
