9. General Engineering and Work Experience
I have nearly 40 years experience in the engineering Industry.
Whilst I am mature, I am still enthused with Electronics, and associated industries.
I love design, and need the creative outlet that this gives.
I have done Project management, Product management, and indeed Design Management on a
department basis.
I am a goal and task driven person, and I enjoy coaching and mentoring younger designers.
Whilst I have done a management role, with a department of 4 people reporting to me, it is the design of
products that I really enjoy.
Not just the electronics, but the mechanical design aspects ( case, housing etc), through to the product
manufacture and regulatory approvals.
I enjoy being the design authority, dealing with other engineers, contract manufacturing, and suppliers.
I always involve stakeholders such as sales, logistics/maintenance/support and suppliers.
For example, my role at Appian was to join on a contract with a company with no electronic design staff
or competence,
I developed the product specification, agreed with all the stakeholders, the specification and time-scales,
produced the specification, issued and agreed the sign-off.
I then produced the project plan (using Microsoft project), again have that agreed by the stake holders.
Of course, presentation to the board and sales staff at key stages was essential
I then designed the electronics, produced the PCB's, liaised very closely with the sub contract
manufacturer (who did the mechanical design of the product housing)
Once the basic prototype was up and running, and functional, then produce the test specs., EMC CE
testing etc.
Oversee and act as the design authority, and help the contract manufacturer to produce the product in a
timely and cost effective manner.
I enjoyed immensely setting up, and employing the 4 personnel who directly reported to me, together
with closely working with the 10 people in the software department, and their manager.
And for a medium volume product (1000/annum), the DFM considerations were paramount.
My Electronics skills are extensive, obviously CAD schematic design, PCB layout, and building prototypes
(SMD and through hole)
In most of my designs there is a mix of analogue and digital elements.
The analogue is real time sensor interfacing, temperature, pressure, humidity, amplification and filtering.
It involved SPIC simulations to verify correct operation, stability criteria, and component variations.
The digital element involves single chip micros such as PIC 8 and 16bit, ARM 32 bit, both NXP and
STmicro products.
I have also done HMI products such as touch screen TFT LCD colour graphic displays around the 3-4inch
size.
As part of the micro, I write the firmware necessary to implement the functionality. I write in both C and
assembly at a low level. I have not needed an RTOS.
On the PC side, I have written application for user interfaces, usually using either Visual Basic or Delphi.
10. Altium Designer Experience
I have extensive knowledge and experience of Altium products for over 15 years.
I have designed with the original Protel Autotrax, Protel 99 and finally Protel 99SE ( which I sometimes
use today for simpler designs).
Protel renamed itself to Altium, and I have continued to design with their products ever since.
Prior to 2006, I used Protel99SE on a daily basis, and when I arrived at Plastic Logic, became introduced
to Altium Designer DXP.
The Altium Designer suite is a natural evolution to their previous products, so an easy learning curve.
Since then I have used Altium Designer fro 15 years , and am fluent and experienced in all aspects and
all variations, up to the current V17. Controlled impedance and matched line lengths for USB2.0 and
high speed PCB layouts.
At Plastic Logic, I designed multi-layer boards (8 layer), necessary for complex BGA footprints.
Immediately after Plastic Logic, I worked at Appian, and introduced them to Altium Designer, which
became their design suite of choice. I stayed at Appian for 2 years, using Altium Designer on an almost
daily basis.
At Appian, when I started, they had no design staff or design tools, and thus I did it all.
I am experienced in taking a specification, designing the circuits, entering them in Altium Designer,
designing the PCB, adding the various design rules, performing the design rule checking, validating the
design, generating the required outputs such as BOM's Gerbers, Mechanical drawings where necessary.
I then purchase the necessary components, hand build the prototypes (if appropriate).
Liaise with PCB maker, Contract Assembly Manufacturers, test, prove the design, and engage and assist
the necessary test houses to pass EMC, EU regulations.
Where a design uses a microprocessor, write the firmware in assembler and C, to perform its function.
My designs include microprocessors ( PIC 8 and 16 bit, ARM 32 bit, both NXP and STMicro), low voltage
power devices, 24 volt, 8Amp High side and low side devices, environment monitoring such as humidity,
pressure sensors, temperature sensors using Dallas 1-Wire, Thermocouples, A/D's, DAC's, I2C, SPI, serial
comms. such as RS232, RS485, CANbus.
Very experienced in the latest versions of Altium Designer v16 and now 17, multi channel, multi sheet
and high speed tracking for USB2.0 comms., 6 layer PCB's, Layouts for EMI and EMC compliance are a
speciality.
I also can write PC software using VB, and Delphi, although I don’t class myself as a software engineer.
